Hi. I'm looking for an extract from a play (preferably set in Britain or about British soldiers) that shows how the young men were excited about going off to war and how they thought they'd be home in a few months. I want to show how they didn't know what they were getting into. If anyone knows of anything that could work, I'd be very grateful. Thank you.

If we're going the Michael Morpurgo adaptation route, it's probably worth having a look at Private Peaceful too.

I've only seen the film so can't be certain but I imagine Noel Coward's Cavalcade has a fair amount of flagwaving. For something more modern there's Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme by Frank McGuinness

Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme by Frank McGuinness fits that perfectly in my opinion (as profquatermass has already suggested). I know the play fairly well (wrote an essay on it at Uni last term) so if you have any questions or want more details, let me know.

The Christmas Truce (RSC) showed a bit of this I think and the more plegmatic attitude of experienced soldiers.

What about that lovely 'It Is Easy To Be Dead' play? About the poet Charles Sorley.
