Despite seeing some surprisingly and disappointingly low ratings online, I went to see this yesterday as I've enjoyed the director's previous work and this sounded interesting; plus, I wanted to make up my own mind.
So, I did indeed find it surprisingly disappointing and above all, at 2 hours 15, far too long for what it had to say - whatever that was. The greatest potential improvement imo would be for the film to lose at least 45 mins but preferably an hour. The cast and setup are good but the film really took its time and seemed to meander and not to know where it was going, so it became hard to sustain interest. The tone was equally uncertain: was it sci-fi, comedy, a love story, an adventure, or all or none of those? Fair enough, no film or play has to fit clearly into one category or to be predictable but it does have to feel confident in its own right and this didn't.

Yes, I was really disappointed in this - I thought the concept was great and I loved the setup and the initial scenes in Leisureland, but when the film started getting involved in the slums (such a heavy-handed nod to Mexican and Indian "guest workers" in places like the US and the Gulf) it started losing its way for me. The final act in Norway seemed a completely different tone from the setup and so the denouement didn't have the punch they were aiming for.
I feel sorry giving a negative report of this because I loved probably 50% of it, but the remainder was so unfocused that by the end I was really willing it to end.

I agree with both of you, I was disappointed in this movie too. It had such potential with the storyline of the downsized people but then it went all over the place. I had to force myself to finish watching it.
