I could definitely force myself to see this cast if I know ahead of time which performances Ian McIntosh will be doing, as countless bookings for JCS saw me see countless alternates/understudies (albeit very capable ones).

My disappointment was a result of spending quite a lot of loot to at least catch him a couple of times in JCS and I always seemed to miss him. However, his alternate/covers were excellent. I'm almost as excited to see Matt Bateman as Valjean at some point as I think he is also superb. I vaguely recall seeing a lockdown vid he did as Valjean. Vocally, he smashes it out of the park.

So I certainly didn't ever have an attendance issue with Ian in JCS - so I don't think he is unreliable! There were certain weeks/venues where he was off for several/all shows so to the extent one should speculate about these things (and I generally think we shouldn't) am assuming he was unwell or having life events.
But I saw the show in Manchester, Bristol, Eastbourne, Birmingham, Salford, Wimbledon and Glasgow and he was on for all his scheduled shows. So in my n=1 experience he is a very reliable performer!
Josh Pittermann and Will Callan on the other hand were/are randomly off SO much I'd massively advise ever booking specifically to see them. Which is frustrating as they were/are sensational in their respective roles.

I'm almost as excited to see Matt Bateman as Valjean at some point as I think he is also superb. I vaguely recall seeing a lockdown vid he did as Valjean. Vocally, he smashes it out of the park. Did you ever see his Judas? Shem was off at my last show in Glasgow and I was gutted that Luke was also out (he was sensational in both roles). But Matt absolutely knocked Judas out of the park with the most insane vocals. Was stunning! |
