I started watching Big Brother in Series 3, having chanced across it one evening, and I loved it when they allowed the participants to create the entertainment from their personalities alone. The last week with Kate, Jonny, Alex and Jade was fantastic. I started to go off it when too much of the show became deliberately engineered situations. There was so much manipulation of the housemates that the natural interactions were suppressed and I grew bored with that quite quickly.
I think the turning point for me was in Series 7 when Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace was subject to bullying that regularly reduced her to tears and the show seemed to revel in it. The saving grace of that series was her obvious delight when she discovered that, far from the public hating her as some other housemates had led her to believe, she was actually the most popular girl in the house. I struggled to see the entertainment in having a show allow someone to be bullied to that extent just because they thought it made good television.
I watched some of series 8 but my heart wasn't in it, and after that I was done with the whole thing. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Big Brother never really recovered due to the fight in BB5 and also the Jade Goody/Shilpa Shetty incident in CBB and it became a poison chalice for Channel 4 which is why they originally axed it. Channel 5 really only picked it up due to being owned by Richard Desmond at the time and he needed it to provide contents for his papers and magazines.

So sad it’s been axed by C5, but very hopeful of a reprieve elsewhere - Endemol have just applied for a 3 year extension to their planning permission, so here’s hoping something is in the works.
Bit of a weird day for me, as I was part of the production team on BB2009 when it was originally announced C4 had axed it... so I have a lot of sympathy for the production team doing a live launch the same day the latest axe was announced.
It’s not what it once was and I agree a revamp is needed - but it shouldn’t need a break in order to achieve that: just new talent in production.
The thing is, it still gains over 1M viewers daily, which is still pretty good going in a world where the soaps now achieve under 5M regularly and ITV prime time averages around the 5M mark. If it can keep its audience and move to another channel then I see no reason why it couldn’t continue - I can’t believe it’s a loss making vehicle so see no reason why it couldn’t continue.

I guess it's a bit of a liability these days. The controversies, fighting etc have steadily pushed boundaries and I guess it's only a matter of time before someone said or did something that the show was unrecoverable from.
Bit of a risk for the channel and advertisers.

Thank God this embarrassment is over. And the way that people were treating Emma what’s-her-name as though she was Jeremy Paxman...

What do you guys think of the current BB housemates? I have been watching but haven't been gripped by it, something felt off with this group. I think there's a lack of likable characters and the ones we have seen all the time have been too over the top or negative. Now that some of the more annoying people have gone and 2 new housemates have come in hopefully it will get better. Obviously BB has tried to make things more interesting this season with Big Coins and bringing in elements of the BB US competition. However at the end of the day it's still the housemates who make the show and this casting has left me confused.
There's another show I have enjoyed more than BB these past few weeks. It's The Circle, is anyone else watching that? It's new and different, totally trashy but entertaining. 😆

Not that keen on the new batch of housemates - no real standout favourite either. Tomasz could have got the underdog vote but has been seen as a game player, Cian is the fun camp Irish guy is likeable and could do well. Zoe might be seen as an underdog as she is a carer for her son and could be a possible winner. Brooke always reminds me of 198O's singer Marilyn.
I thought Lewis G was a Tw*t but he was funny and since he went it has been a bit boring.

@eldermillan Oooh, I had managed to forget about the horrible name yelling. 🙉 Yep, he's out and true that the other Lewis is annoying too. Did you hear, new CBB US this winter! That should be entertaining again.
@hitster You're right, Cian and Zoe are more likable than the others and Tomasz turned shady real quick. I like Akeem, he seems like a solid guy and I thought he was unfairly targeted. It's a pity that this last season is a mess, very cliquey and quite mean with people deliberately going after each other. And I don't just mean the money thing, they gang up on each other real quick. Good luck to the 2 new housemates who went in 3 weeks late! 😳

Cameron coming out was a big thing for him to do and could make him a popular contestant. I don't think the show has ever had 3 gay men in one series before, there have been a couple on several occasions over the years.

Last night's episode was very touching, I teared up. It was lovely to see the house come together to support Cameron. It takes a lot of courage to come out on tv like that and he's only 18. Well done to him.

I could recall Hughie as soon as you mentioned him but had to think who the others were for a bit.

I could recall Hughie as soon as you mentioned him but had to think who the others were for a bit. Hughie and Ryan got together on the series and I believe are still a couple to this day. Sam and Ryan knew each other from outside the house, I believe they had a quick fling at some point. Andy was the journalist who got proposed to by his then boyfriend during a task near the end of the series, for him then to discover once he left the house that his man had been cheating on him. My favourite 'gay' has to be the bald Canadian man from BB7, the same series as Nicki Graeme and Pete

Great news that Hughie and Ryan are still together. Sam and Andy were both hairdressers if I recall.
Richard was the Canadian guy that Cheesy116 mentioned - tall bald/shaven headed guy always reminded me of Right Said Fred. He was a calming influence in a crazy house and seemed a very kind chap - he finished 4th overall. Once told Imogen Thomas a pot plant had more personality or called her a pot plant I seem to recall.

Well that's it, after 18 years BBUK has ended. Even though this last season wasn't the best I still wanted the series to continue. Seeing Emma and Rylan so emotional last night made me also shed a few tears.

Wish he hadn’t opened his mouth and got himself ejected.

I'd heard that Lewis F had said something anti semetic and it must have been very offensive not to show it. They showed the Ken Doll guy using the n-word and Biggins said something about Jewish people ewhen he got kicked out.
Lewis was a likely top 3 if he had stayed, Cameron was a predictable winner once he'd gone.
