At the Interval, at the Barbican, of an evening of Armistead Maupin, the author of "Tales of the City," reading from his memoirs.
The BBC Symphony Orchestra is performing music, chosen by Maupin, in between readings.
The third piece of music was "Mad About the Boy," performed by Jamie Parker. ABSOLUTELY STUNNING, so expressive, musically and emotionally! Thank goodness that voice is free of Harry Potter, for tonight anyway!
When he finished, Maupin, sitting next to Parker for the song, quipped "I had the best seat in the house."
If you want to hear Parker, this evening is broadcast on Christmas Day at 5pm on Radio 4, and will be on iPlayer thereafter.

The full broadcast of this show (it was abbreviated on Christmas Day, with Jamie Parker cut out, grrrr), is scheduled for Radio 3 at 9pm New Years Day (tomorrow). It will be on iPlayer here: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09k869sI really really recommend this show: (1) Armistead Maupin was out when it was much scarier to be out, and he wasn't just out, but he was at the forefront of those who were out, and his reading his from memoirs at this show was profoundly moving (he had to make sure his husband was in the room before he spoke about some things, so intimate were they); (2) Russell Tovey showed up at the end of the show (which I didn't know, when I initially recommended this show), and he reads Maupin's legendary "Coming Out" Letter, which was written for the character of Mouse in his novels, and which formed Maupin's (and many thousands of others') own coming out letter to his own parents, and which he describes as the passage of which he's prouder than anything else he's ever written; (3) Jamie Parker was really great, and I can't wait to hear him again.  |

Listened to the abridged version on iplayer and thought it was wonderful. Looking forward to hearing the full version especially to hear Jamie Parker sing. Russell Toveys reading was so touching.
Where can I findustry out what music was played as some of it I didn't recognise.
Wish I'd been there.

I am currently listening to this and we have just had Russell Tovey read "Michael's letter". Oh dear god it wrung my withers well and truly.

What a special evening in the concert hall. Simple, heartfelt and sincere. Maupin is a real treasure.
