Donald Trump is like an antagonist in Parks and Recreation. He says stupid things that everyone can tell are stupid, but the swayable majority applaud him and go for him instead of the sensible one with sensible options. Farce repeating itself as tragedy this time, the depressing fact is that in this relative situation the sensible one with sensible options wasn’t Leslie Knope but the third Bush, and that went well. I gave up hope some time ago that people would turn against him and realise that every claim he makes is a lie made up that morning and see that intelligent Americans, unintelligent Americans and THE REST OF THE WORLD despised him before the joke went too far let alone now, so now I’m just twiddling my thumbs, waiting for him to say something so illegal he constitutionally is not allowed to run, looking up ‘Least Nuke-able Countries’ to move to after he’s voted in.
Regarding Drumpf, I quite like keeping his name Trump. As an immature Brit, ‘trump’ means ‘fart’ to me, and that’s fair enough. This is the way the world ends. This is the way the world ends. This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but with a great big smelly trump.
At least we have moderately amusing theatrical parodies to occupy us in the interim.

Admittedly, I'm not that familiar with American politics as most of my knowledge comes from watching Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel, but isn't Donald Trump the lesser of two evils compared to Ted Cruz? I really think the GOP should (have) nominate(d) Marco Rubio (not that I'd vote Republican if I were American).

Trump is the lesser of three evils. He's not as hard right as either Cruz or Rubio, he just loves getting attention. Plus Hilary would easily beat him. The fact that the Republican National Committee is terrified of having him as their candidate tells you all you need to know.

I suppose, as members of the right-wing party, there's a good chance all the candidates are thinking the same sorts of things, but Trump is the only one who is damn fool enough to say them out loud where people are listening. This election just doesn't get any less terrifying...

On a superficial level, Trump is also far more charismatic (to some) and has been famous for years outside of politics, unlike either Cruz or Rubio. (On paper both of the latter are probably worse as to what they would actually do in office.)

Because it's the 'peasants' (for which, read the electorate) who are actually supporting him. As much as Trump or the others are objectionable, in a democracy people like him only prosper if people vote for them. Trump is running as a populist nationalist (somewhat like his seeming hero Putin), so he tells people what they want to hear, knowing full well that what they want to hear is, by regular standards, extreme. So it's not Trump that scares me, it's the large proportion of Americans who want to vote for him. |

Trump's a libertarian conservative, rather than a hard-right theocrat conservative, and his horrible statements (regarding killing the families of ISIS, or Mexicans being rapists, or treating all Muslims as presumed terrorists) theoretically make him beatable when the general public weigh in in November. But Donald Trump's ascendancy is beyond sense, in that it is a personality cult based on hate-fuelled fear-based populist demagoguery, and I can imagine him winning, no matter what the pundits think. There are plenty of (even sensible) people who are willing to give him a try simply because they want to see what happens in the next episode of the entertaining Donald Trump show, a modern P.T. Barnum, broadcasting his own "Greatest Show on Earth" from the White House. As P.T. Barnum didn't say (but is often credited as having said): "There's a sucker born every minute." Trump has the vibe of a narcissistic psychopath, with zero empathy for anybody, so I don't take his stated positions on anything seriously. I worry what would happen if a joker like that had his finger hovering over the nuclear button, if he feels he's not being treated with "respect" by other world leaders, or even by the public. With him, there's always a vulgar display. I really hope he doesn't become the most powerful man on Earth. |
