I decided to buy a ticket for An American in Paris after all, since I am drawn to the story and enjoy these big Broadway productions. Made the purchase on TodayTix and used your code for the discount kathryn . 👍

Just a fortnight to go now, Elle. You must be getting excited. As an unjaded outsider, I am pleased to report that the Christmas lights in London this year are particularly spectacular. The West End really is glittering! May I be terribly presumptuous, and suggest a walking route? Start at Fortnum & Mason, halfway along Piccadilly. (Free samples at this time of year.) Cross over and walk through the Burlington Arcade. (Strictly no whistling allowed, or open umbrellas.) Turn left, then right, onto Bond Street. Walk up Bond Street to Oxford Street. Turn right and walk along Oxford Street to Oxford Circus. Turn right onto Regent Street. Walk down Regent Street to Piccadilly Circus, or beyond. At this time of year, it starts to get dark at 3.30/4pm.

Yes, not long now and very excited for this trip! As I wrote in another thread I managed to get a ticket for Dreamgirls as well so now have 6 out of 8 shows sorted. Then have also purchased the backstage tour at the National Theatre which was only £10 and I think it will be worth every cent. Thanks for that tip @emicardiff. Thank you, I love this walking tour that you suggested TallPaul and will do that. Good to know about the no whistling rule. 😂 Think it will be really nice to discover the Covent Garden, Soho, Mayfair area on foot. I can't wait to see London all lit up and in festive mode. 🎄

If you still have spare slots for shows, "A Christmas Carol" at the Old Vic is excellent and getting some rave reviews on here.

Bananaman The Musical preview on Saturday 16th matinee - £14. Not a recommendation because we know nothing about it yet and it could be rubbish, but the Southwark Playhouse has a good reputation for musicals and it might be an amusing afternoon. Only a couple of seats left though!

Good to know about the no whistling rule. It's a very old rule, enforced by the resident Beadles, that dates back to the days when some of the Arcade's upper rooms were used by a certain kind of lady, if you catch my drift. Why not be a rebel and whistle one of your favourite musical tunes? I'd somehow missed that you'd booked for Dreamgirls. You may already know that the Savoy Theatre was the London home of Legally Blonde, so you should feel right at home. If theatre architecture is your thing, then the interior of the Savoy Theatre is an Art Deco masterpiece. (If you go down the steps to the Stage Door, and around the corner, you will see that it's actually a much older building.) Savoy Court, which is the short road that leads to both The Savoy hotel and Savoy Theatre, is the only road in the UK were vehicles drive on the right, rather than the left. You asked for suggestions in a previous post about places to eat with a theatrical link. I've never been, because I don't really do healthy food, but the Shaftesbury Avenue branch of Leon is staffed by musical theatre graduates and hopefuls. It looks like there's a good deal if you eat after 5pm. Here's the link: leonrestaurants.co.uk/restaurants/westend/. Who knows, you could see a star of the future!!

@emicardiff Sure, will do! You guys have definitely been a big help and offered a lot of original idea's for things to do. @xanderl A Christmas Carol looks good and I would like to see it. Not sure I can fit it in though. So many shows, so little time... I could see an extra show on Sunday afternoon but there's less choice then. BurlyBeaR Thank you for the info. TallPaul I appreciate all the information and the many great suggestions that you have provided, thank you very much! I wouldn't be able to keep a straight face to whistle. 😄

I think all that is left now, Elle, is to wish you bon voyage. As you probably already know, the British are obsessed with the weather. Your timing is almost perfect! Friday and Saturday are going to feel cold, there may be a little rain on Sunday, but next week is going to be positively balmy, with daytime temperatures in double figures. I know you are a seasoned traveller, but I think we all want you to remember London for all the right reasons: -Stay safe. -Keep alert. -Don't fall for any scams. -Watch out for rogue cyclists. -Most of all, have a FAB-U-LOUS time. And don't forget to send the Board a postcard!

Thank you TallPaul, can't wait! I'm obsessed with the weather too so that's great news. 👍 Should hopefully arrive around lunch time at Gatwick and already have my tickets for the Gatwick Express. From Victoria station I can take a cab or bus to the hotel. Will buy the Oyster card there. Then later in the afternoon I'm going to walk around Covent Garden and Soho to discover the area. First show tomorrow night is 42nd Street. Have high expectations for that because of all the great reviews here and am looking forward to seeing it. Thank you everyone for the help planning this trip, I think it will be a great one. See you tomorrow London! 😍

My flight was delayed so got in later today. Only had time to walk around the Strand and Covent Garden before the show, it was already dark and sooooo busy! But then it was a Friday night I guess? Other tourists asked me for directions 4 times. 😄 Considered a cheeky Nando's but went to Pret for soup. Also tried a mince pie, yum! The traffic on the left needs getting used to. Must look the right way!!! The city feels similar to NYC: so vibrant with endless possibilities. I know I will barely scratch the surface during this week. So much to see and do!
42nd Street, what a feast for the eyes and ears! This is really a SHOW!!! Just pure entertainment and fun. Excellent opening and encore. Such a large cast, it was impressive to see. Left humming the tune.

So glad I didn't let the bad reviews on Tripadvisor deter me from seeing An American in Paris. It was indeed wonderful and the ballet lovely. Really enjoyed it tonight. It's a pity it's closing soon, looked like a full house tonight.
For the matinee I wasn't able to go get a ticket for Jamie in time so saw School of Rock instead. It was fun and as expected there were a lot of kids there, cute. For me it was an OK musical but not a memorable one.

Other tourists asked me for directions 4 times. I always regard it as a badge of honour to be asked for directions. It means I must look like a local. If, by the end of my visit, I haven't been asked, I start insisting on giving directions to random strangers, whether they want them or not!!!

About 10 years ago I booked an impulsive last minute trip to NYC and it was my first time there. I was unprepared and knew nothing of the city or Broadway. As luck would have it my hotel was right by Times Square so I could not miss the theatres! The first show I ever saw was Legally Blonde and the rest is history. I discovered a passion for the theatre, fell in love with NYC and returned many times.
On that first NYC trip the last show I saw was Mamma Mia and I left buzzing. So it was fitting that I end my first West End trip the same way tonight. I love how the crowd got up to dance at the end, just like 10 years ago... I'm buzzing again! 😄
I'm leaving tomorrow night and this trip has been so wonderful that I don't want to go yet. I have fallen in love with London too now. Londoners showed me much kindness, thank you. I already can't wait to return! Now where can I pick up one of those I ❤ London shirts...

Thanks TallPaul ! Made it home safely. Who's leaving? I only just got to this board. 😄 Still need to tell you guys about what else I did in London and keep up with the shows for my future trips etc. Oh yes, there will be many future trips! Sorry NYC, we need to go on a break, I have a new city in my life. Now that I got the basic London stuff down next time will be even better!

A few thoughts on the West End. Being used to always receiving a Playbill it is odd in the beginning to not have that and not being able to look up who is performing. But I would much rather pay less for tickets than get a free Playbill and the programmes are reasonably priced. I didn't see cast boards but then I didn't look for them either. After the show I went online to see who performed. I didn't stagedoor at all this trip.
Ok I have to ask this, what is up with the ice cream?!? 😂 I was absolutely fascinated with the array of ice creams on offer at each show in even below zero weather. I had it only once at Book of Mormon because that theatre was boiling but mostly I had a hot tea to warm up. Seeing the ice cream at every interval and so many people buying them did make me smile. Love your love for ice cream!

Tiny tubs of ice cream with a wooden spoon (now mostly plastic - terrible development!) are an absolutely vital part of any interval experience! I have no idea why it's an 'only in Britain' thing, but my entire childhood is full of memories that the only times we got ice cream, as a treat, were at the theatre or when the ice cream van came jingling by the house (in the summer)!
To be fair, a tub of ice cream is a 'quiet food' - no rustling sweet wrappers, no crunching noises! I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is one national theatre tradition that should be adopted far more widely! Clearly, ice cream can't be brought in from outside for temperature reasons, but I would hope that people entering a theatre can make it through one act of a performance, before needing to have food! Then they can buy their tubs from ushers carrying giant boxes on their stomachs, and everyone can have a second act without dealing with the people next to them working their way through a party pack of Pringles - which happened to me the other month!

A tub of ice cream is NOT a "quiet food"!! What about all that scraping which ruins the start of every second half? Just accept there's none left! (Sorry, rant over)
