Went to see this last night. It wasn’t for me. The sound mix was awful, at times I just couldn’t hear the vocals at all. And mics were left on off stage several times, causing extra competing sounds, luckily no one swearing or the like.
I did love the lighting and the costumes and the physical comedy moments. The story just didn’t hang well and while I enjoyed the group numbers, there were too many self indulgent solos that were musically boring.
And a lot rests on the young performers, we had an excellent Bruno who had a massive voice, incredible in one so tiny. And his performance somewhat overshadowed the perfectly competent Luke, and the Helga who sounded unwell and maybe shouldn’t have been on at all. I can imagine a totally different show depending on which young cast are on.

I saw this recently - Daniel Rigby was brilliant. The two young leads - really great. Bertie Caplin (Luke) - what a stage name and George Menezes Cutts (Bruno) I think the latter is a star and reminds me so much of Rupert Everett. Cutts was indeed terrific. I thought the boys played in pairs, but I didn't see Caplin, I saw Frankie Keita, who was fine.

I really liked this. Every member of the cast was excellent. The children were very excellent. I would pay to see it next year. The programme was good value. Huge cheers at the finish.5* from me.

I hope they bring it back with some changes.
Fingers crossed.

They would be wise to do a ton of work on it, and then bring it back next Xmas.
Under no circumstances should this transfer to the west end in its current form. Also not that it could- nowhere is big enough for it unless they want to lose all their money and put it in Drury Lane

I think some work needs to be done in the second act, but its very good as is, and i think would be fine in the West End
i suspect the most likely scenario would be it have another run at the national end of the year though, and then transfer Summer/Autumn 2025. Hopefully they can hang on to the cast

Caught this for a second time tonight. This time from the front row “severely restricted bench” as opposed to middle of the circle.
Firstly, severely restricted bench is a total overstatement! It was quite comfy, I just had to move around a little after a while. Great view too. The only thing you slightly miss is the mice running around, but if you perk your head up at those times you can see them. One of the mice even fell over the stage into our seats during the final witches scene lol
Really enjoyed the show, obviously some tweaks needed but nothing that hasn’t already been mentioned here. The kids costumes are notably worse up close. SAT and Katherine are unreal! So great to see them in these roles up close. The show could really benefit from more time with the witches on stage. Very busy tonight still, and the audience seemed to love it. Sincerely hope this has a future after some minor adjustments.
I’ve seen people on here mention that a west end transfer would be difficult because of finding a theatre. Can you explain why? Is it literally just stage size?

Sally Ann Triplett is not continuing with the show after this run.
I think Daniel Rigby is unlikely to return.

I really hope that this will get the second life that people are predicting and if it does it would be a shame to lose the adult leads. Katherine Kingsley has said that she's been working on this show on and off for years, does anyone have any inside info if this is also the case for for Sally Ann Triplett and/or Daniel Rigby?

The Olivier stage is huge. There are only a tiny handful of theatres this could go to in its current form, and that’s not happening. Well… Drury Lane will be free soon - but that would be one enormous risk.

Can't believe this show is even being considered for a future life. It's dire.

Obviously, everyone is entitled to their own opinion on the show, but judging from the critical reviews, word of mouth ( given the run is sold out) and the voters tally above, a lot of people don't think its terrible!

Im just surprised the tone of talk on here is that its a flop in some way, when by most metrics is a critical and commerical hit for the NT

Can't believe this show is even being considered for a future life. It's dire. It's interesting you say this, given you were fairly positive after the first preview on this thread! What changed, in your view? It's more a case of what didn't change. I saw it very early on and felt there were some obvious elements that would change through the preview process - I anticipated some cuts to lines and scenes and the first preview was so disrupted due to tech issues I felt it could only get better. I felt there was promise. However, after seeing it again I found that little had changed and the more "complete" evolved production I had anticipated hadn't actually happened. It's very unusual for me to be negative about a show - in fact, anybody reading my previous views on some shows might think that my views are quite lightweight as I err on the side of the positive and probably overscore a lot of productions. This show just didn't do it for me, despite giving it three chances. That said, there seem to be plenty of people who do like it, so what do I know?

Maybe the Lynne for Christmas? Again- it would have to be considerably redesigned for even the Gillian Lynne.

I wonder if the Olympia Theatre which is due to open in 2025 could be an option depending on how big the stage is? Not West End but at 1576 seats, it would be an option.

Seems more and more wise to stay away from this board before seeing a show, everyone has become so negative. Absolutely enjoyed the production, the whole audience loved it, great leads, great production values. Just the one number with the weird kids costumes reminded me of a school production. Still 5 stars.
