It's hard to believe some of the attitudes being expressed. Here's a young English actress, Samantha Barks, being cast in a major Broadway musical, making her Broadway debut - after what must have been a hugely competitive audition process - in a coveted star-making role, and what we get here is moaning about her blandness and lack of suitability for the part. Obviously Jerry Mitchell and the creative staff of the show disagree with that assessment. How about congratulating Samantha on her great news!! Seems like a more appropriate response.

As for stories of prostitutes and their consorts, well, that's the New Testament and even earlier, isn't it, as a theme?
It's unapologetically about how a woman needs a man to make her understand and realize her potential. Also, message: sleep your way through men, maybe you'll land one who is rich and will also love you for the ho you are. No disrespect to sex workers. If it's a story about a sex worker and the life (a la, The Life, then I am all game). But I just think that the story was outdated even in the '90s. It hardly spells out women's empowerment. |

Annaleigh Ashford did all of the readings and had to drop out because of her film/TV work so I'm guessing Barks wasn't their first choice at all. We're allowed to post negative thoughts on a casting decision even if you guys think differently or take a fancy to her.  |

One of the only lines i remember ftom Pretty Woman, apart from the shoppping sequence, is at the very end, when the black guy crosses the road saying 'whats your dream baby, everybody got a dream'

Putting aside the show itself, I'd like to stand as a member of the Sam Barks fanclub whose interest *is* largely based on thinking she's very talented and hoping she continues to do well.  |

Alright then I'll bite. I stand before you as a committed Pretty Woman fan and admittedly casual but still comitted Sam Barks fan.
On Pretty Woman, it's an adaptation of Pygmalion so I'm going with until we stop any further stuffy My Fair Lady revivals as well then I'm happy for this one to exist as well. It's also not got any more dodgy a message than your average rom-com, and is somewhat better in a way because despite the fact that yes they do get together in the end (spoiler alert chaps) BUT first she walks away from him because she doesn't just want to be his kept woman. And I believe the last line of the film is 'She rescues him right back' I've always read it as a message about them both needing someone to sort their sh*t out with, and that actually Vivian is the more together one of the two anyway.
And anyway, it's a better moral message than the OTHER Richard Gere film to musical 'Officer and a Gentleman' which is basically 'Get yourself pregnant so a man will have to stay'.
As for Ms Barks, she seems a talented and perfectly lovely lady and good luck to her I say!

Great role for Sam to get, I'm sure a few US actresses are a bit put out. Is it all going to be new Bryan Adams score or will they use some of the movie soundtrack - Natalie Cole, Roxette, Go West amongst others did new songs for it. The title track is apparently one of the 10 richest songs ever so it would be interesting to see what the Big O's estate does as I'd assume the producers would want it in if they can.

Bryan Adams just talking about this on BBC Radio 2 said that Samantha Banks is playing the lead role and it opens on Broadway sometime next year.
Also, all songs for it are sorted. The song "Please Stay" that he has just released was written for the musical but didn't make the cut. It should have done. It's lovely.

Noooo, emicardiff...nooooo... LOL I never liked the film - or at least it absolutely did nothing for me. And I feel this adaptation is so tone deaf and coming out in probably the worse time ever. But I'd see it if I could  BTW...watching this clip all I kept on thinking of was everything I doo...I do it for you.... |

Most of the reviews seem to be gentle enough - but these are Chicago reviews who probably don't want to stop these out of town trials from running in their city. Most of them seem to be encouraging but give a lot of feedback on what to do and what to fix. Whatever they decide to change, I don't think the New York press will be as supportive.
