Twenty years on and she's still in the news. I guess younger members won't know or remember just how huge the whole Diana thing was, both in life and death. She didn't half sell some papers didn't she? It was like a real life soap opera. Fantastic. Not a time that the Royal Family will look back at with any relish. The way some of them carried on was a disgrace. Is she responsible for reforming the Royal Family as is claimed? I think she was, and that the way William has been allowed to start his family life pretty much in private wouldn't have happened otherwise. We certainly couldn't rely on The Queen to change anything. Anyway, I still reckon she was done in

I was around at the time, and frankly the blanket coverage of the anniversary is a bit ridiculous!
I agree that the manner of her death has had an impact on William and Harry's relationship with the press, but I wouldn't say they've been 'allowed' to have private lives - it's more that as soon as the press try to revert back to their old tricks they manage to leverage lingering public sympathy to shame them for doing so. It's only the British press operating under that restraint - the international press are as intrusive as ever, albeit they don't have the budgets to stalk them properly anymore, so it's only when they are on tours or holidays that the international paps get hold of something. Remember Kate sunbathing topless in France? Those pictures were published internationally, the only reason we didn't see them in British tabloids was because the public was firmly on her side.
William and Harry - unlike Diana - have never attempted to use the tabloids, doing their best to bypass them entirely. This has infuriated the press who absolutely do their best to punish them for not playing ball with negative coverage, but also means that they have retained the moral high ground. On occasions when they have lost that moral high ground - high jinks in Vegas, for example - the press have absolutely pounced on it.

We had the added 'treat' of 'Diana and Wales' on BBC Wales last night (I'm sure it's on iplayer for those so inclined) the five minutes or so I caught included a man who collects Royal China and travels the country to photograph the Royals at events (a bit like a train spotter but with the Queen)
Oy, enough already. It was terribly sad, and is terribly sad still for her family but it's both unnecessary and a bit macabre to drag it all up again.

Lived through it "live" so have no appetite to see the repeats. Clearly she still sells newspapers and gets TV viewers otherwise why the "anniversary"? It should be an entirely private matter.

For those of us who lived through it , it was such a strange week. I remember being so emotional about it and as it has said on the many documentaries I was not the only one! Her legacy deserves to be remembered and I am glad William and Harry have had their opportunity to say their piece about their mother.

It was upsetting seeing a bereaved family handling this tragedy at the time. That situation will always be upsetting regardless of who the dead person is, but in this case it was as public as it can get. I was surprised at how emotional her brother's funeral speech still made me feel when I saw a snippet of one of the recent programmes. In the same programme, Prince William said he felt baffled by all the emotion and mourning by people who never knew his mother.
Having seen a bit of that show I have no desire to see any more of the seemingly obligatory 20-year raking-over. Did we get similar at the 10-year mark as well? I can't remember.
Yes she is still used as a circulation-booster. The already-repulsive Express, with its track record of total obsession with Diana, has set the bar high (low?) with its "Diana speaks from beyond the grave to back Brexit".

We're currently doing the 'where were you' conversation in work...
I was 13, and it was (is) my friend's Birthday, we were going to Oakwood theme part and my friend was annoyed there were no fireworks that night. (we were 13...)

Clearly a large number of people were positively affected by her and that impact has endured. Beyond that positive, however, her use of the press to play private matters out in public and to boost her empathetic image has been taken as a template by others. creating a media monster that has just grown and grown resulting in a negative affect on many lives. Whether it be the 'star' or the the ordinary person caught up in a media storm, the demand to show what the public (or rather the tabloid press' imagined version of them) deem an acceptable level of emotion and openness is appalling.
It has also stoked the conspiracy mongers, who, unable to accept the randomness of fate, see all authority and experts as just an elite who keep the truth from the 'ordinary person' (as in anyone with a slim grasp of facts and realities). She may not have created Trump but there's definitely a line to be seen connecting her death and his election.

C'mon though. Bit of a co-incidence wasn't it? She's on the verge of bringing the House of Windsor to its knees and she suddenly dies in a car 'accident'? If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck etc.

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck etc. But she really wasn't on the verge of bringing the House of Windsor to its knees. She was just dating a bloke and having some holidays. It was hardly a constitutional crisis! The worse that could have happened is that they would have been mildly embarrassed by her. They've weathered far worse embarrassment - Fergie, for example!

Yeah but whilever she was alive Charles couldn't remarry because the country would have HATED whoever he chose and she'd have made their lives a misery taking the limelight running around with different blokes (which Charles hated). Nah, she was done in good and proper. As sure as eggs are eggs!

When I was digging out my old Follies programmes at the weekend I also found a load of newspapers I had saved from the day after Diana's funeral with all the pics. Forgot I had saved them. Also a collection of magazines featuring David Beckham. What does all that say about me?

Nah, she was done in good and proper. As sure as eggs are eggs! Don't be daft. Public opinion wouldn't have been sympathetic to her forever if she had been running around with different blokes - in fact the press had the knives out for her on the day she died, as the newspapers went to press before the news came through about the crash and they didn't have time to pull the stories. Charles, on the other hand, has stuck with one woman through thick and thin, it appears to be true love, and she has been remarkably discreet and well-behaved compared to most royal spouses. It wouldn't be hard to spin public opinion their way, once Diana's image had tarnished a bit. And it inevitably would have, if she'd not died so tragically young - she wanted to enjoy her life after being constrained by her position for so long. it's utterly ludicrous to suggest that the Royal Family had the mother of the 2nd and 3rd in line to the throne - who naturally loved her - murdered for being a bit embarrassing. They didn't even have Wallace Simpson bumped off, and she caused a constitutional crisis! The Duke of Windsor lived to a ripe old age, and he was a Nazi sympathiser! Having awkward members of the family murdered is just not their style.

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck etc. Except she wasn't, and wouldn't have got close. In fact her death was to be a far, far greater lightning rod than if she had lived (cue theories about anti Royalist forces bumping her off, that are equally as lacking in reality).

I just remember feeling so sorry for Prince William and Prince Harry.... It was heartbreaking
"Not other Royal Family in History has killed more members of their own family than the British Royal Family, including Diana" this is what an historian I once had the pleasure to have a brief conversation with, told me.

My friend still resents her for dying on his birthday and taking the attention away. So does mine! I said Happy Birthday today and she replied "Diana is still stealing my thunder" My friend had got married on the day before, which was a Saturday. I got up on Sunday morning to join my parents at breakfast (still living at home at the time) and my father oh so casually mentioned "The English princess Diana is dead" and I was like oh yea, not believing a word until my Mom confirmed it. So for me her death is forever tied to my friend's wedding.

I have been tempted to vent my opinion on Facebook, but realised people who know where I live took a different view to me and would probably have put my windows through.
Princess Diana died in very tragic circumstances. I am very sorry she lost her life, but enough already. It was 20 years ago, so what? Let her rest in peace.
The Royal Family have faced bigger crisis and managed them (Wallace Simpson). I think I am the only person I know, who thinks the Queen handled the aftermath of her death in a very human way. Your grandchildren have lost their mother, of course you should shield them from public gawping. Keep them as safe and secure as you can. The public outrage was just maudlin, did they expect to see William and Harry paraded for their benefit? Did the public expect to see the Queen weep in the Mall, or Prince Charles break down in Green Park? It was never going to happen, but the tabloid press were implicit in whipping up public opinion to sell their grubby papers. Just as they are doing now. Prince George, Duke of Kent, was killed during World War II, in the crash of a military plane. He never knew his youngest child,(now) Prince Michael of Kent, was born some weeks after his death. Was his gallant death remembered 20 years later?
Diana is dead, let her rest in peace.
