One of the great US voices has left the stage at the age of 89.
An amazing talent with a wide range of roles to her credit.

Till There Was You is one of my favourite songs. Such a wonderful talent (I love watching the Kennedy Centre Honors and seeing the vast array of things she played, with all those wonderful women singing her songs) RIP

Very sad. I remember her 80th birthday concert and she was magnificent. One of the great ladies of the stage musical.

A great lady of musical theatre. I am sad that her passing has not warranted a mention on the BBC news website.

Certainly a legend in her own lifetime. I saw her in London at The Lyric which was a truly inspiring performance. Her Anyone Can Whistle without a microphone was amazing, her voice was so pure and she filled the theatre with it.
May you continue to Glitter and Be Gay in your final resting place. You and your beautiful voice gave me so much joy over the years. RIP.

One of the true greats of Broadway - just reading her biog - she won Tony awards in the 1950's and was still getting Olivier nominations in the 2000's, that shows how many years she was at the top of her game. Shame she didn't reach 90 as I'm sure there would have been a big Broadway tribute for her but that will sadly have to be in her memory.
