Why do people at the curtain call need to put four fingers in their mouth with both hands and whistle?
This has happened close to be recently and went right through my bloody head and I asked both people to knock it off, one wanted to get confrontational about it. Apart from going through my head I find it self indulgent.

A friend of mine does ape noises at gigs. Like a sort of "OOGH OOGH OOGH!" noise. Gets some right looks off people in Manchester, in London he's been told to pack it in.
I wouldn't worry too much about whistling. It is a recognised form of appreciation.

It's people who applaud above their heads that I find annoying. "Look everyone, I'm applauding"

I don't give a fig how people show their appreciation for a show. So long as they don't spill my drink when they do it.

I've always thought the act of applauding above the head wasn't a look at me I'm applauding gesture but a sign of greater appreciation for the show than just normal applause, elevating the hands in a similar way to that of a standing ovation. I'm now intensely self conscious of all the times over the years I've raised my hands above my head at concerts or football in case the applause police behind me are noting me down as a show off

You keep on clapping how you like and to blazes with anyone else. The show has finished, it's not like you're stood up in the middle of the show. Thank heavens no-one here saw me at 'Doctor Faustus' with Kit-off Harington . . .

It's people who applaud above their heads that I find annoying. "Look everyone, I'm applauding" Raised arm and limped wristed "pointing" at the artist annoys the hell out of me. Dont get me started on girls who sit on the shoulders of male friends. Invariably drunk, pint in one hand, pointing (see above) with the other, often wearing some sort of headgear.

Whistling, whooping and any other loud noise is unpleasant for those nearby; also, imo, attention-seeking. If you wish to show your appreciation, clap; if you're really impressed, stand (silently). If you wish to perform, you're in the wrong part of the theatre.

Oh that made me laugh out loud. 2002, Up For Grabs curtain call, front row - the bloke next to me kept doing a double-pointing thing at Madonna, 5 or 6 times, in the hope she'd spot him.

It's people who applaud above their heads that I find annoying. "Look everyone, I'm applauding" Have you ever noticed the variation on this - not necessarily raised-armed, perhaps at about head level or slightly below, but with extra gusto and a kind of resolute look on the face - " No-one can be applauding with more appreciation than I am." Mrs Backdrifter and I take tiger balm to performances as a result of a raised-armed applauder. We'd had a string of instances of being next to bad breath/BO people in audiences and after a gig at which Mrs B was next to a High Clapper who had cartoon-style wavy lines radiating from his armpits we got the tiger balm to help combat event stench. To go back to the OP, yes I've had that head-piercing eardrum-shredding whistle experience too.
