Oh I think the embarrassment can absolutely be justified. I was joking with a male friend about my mother getting pregnant and said 'well she can't anymore, no periods' and anyone would have thought I'd have gone into an in depth lecture on what menstrual blood looks like. Even just the mention of the word period can have some men wincing. As nice as it would be to imagine all men are mature enough to deal with it, it just isn't true. Not to mention the sanitary bins in cubicles can often overflow.

I think part of the problem is that it's one of those things where there's no right response. Anything you can say is a potential minefield. "I see that you menstruate. Well done."

I think it's just a case of acting like the person is talking about any other bodily ailment. I don't know any women that go into any major detail when discussing it so it shouldn't be that much of a problem to listen to.

Well people we have a long way to go. VAT is payable on sanitary products ( am I right, still payable? ) and facilities in schools including primary schools as girls of 10/11 do menstruate are woeful. Public loos if they exist at all do not provide enough free towels or tampons for women 'caught out' or young girls with no money. Medical research hasn't found a cure or treatment for the pain experienced during periods, a pain that can be debilitating and mean time off work or school. ' The pill' seems to be the best option offered. Ok with that for your twelve year old ? Yes we gals should talk more openly about periods and yes, boys should be fully conversant with what periods are etc.
Now, the menopause..........

' The pill' seems to be the best option offered. Ok with that for your twelve year old ? Yes we gals should talk more openly about periods and yes, boys should be fully conversant with what periods are etc. Now, the menopause.......... Indeed. Also there were a few articles recently both about young girls from underprivileged backgrounds being too embarrassed/not wanting to add to financial burden by asking for money for sanitary products, and related to that the problems faced by homeless women as well. The idea of getting 'caught out' at school and the mocking from boys (and indeed some girls) I remember being mortifying.
Also the fact that it's almost not believed by some men just how debilitating period pain can be, despite many women needing some serious medication to even touch the pain.
Anyway all to say we should all be more open about that and menopause- I'm grateful to an older friend of mine who has been very vocal on social media/blogs about that from the outset, breaking down the stigma one person at a time etc.

Oh Monkey, if only it was that easy. In fact, some companies who sell these products apparently do provide them free to underprivileged girls and women, eg through schools.
Shortly after I learned this, I saw the Guardian had published a piece by some ditwit grumbling about how the products shouldn't come in packaging with the company names on, because it was advertising and therefore Bad Form In This Situation, or something. I wonder how many of the women using the products are even half as fussed about this as the right-on writer is.

I think it was something like a large donation to charity, and there were a few people who seemed to think that if you do the right thing and get credit for it then it's just not right enough, and you should do it anonymously so your action carries some sort of moral purity. As if that actually matters to the recipients of the gesture.

Indeed. Sometimes I'm glad the Guardian exists, other times I think it's almost as bad as the Mail for the ridiculous nonsense it spouts!

I do wonder if it is a "British" thing or more universal? It is universal. I work in IT on the technical side and on our floor there is 1 woman (me) and 16 guys and 2 toilets. Before one of those was for me 😈 and the guys had to share theirs. That caused great traffic jams there and eventually it was decided that both toilets would be unisex. But only one has a bin. So there are times that I need that specific toilet. The general looks I get when I turn around because that toilet is taken and the faces I get when they realize why could make a nice picture collage.

And then inform whole office that bin is in place ( don't forget to tell the cleaners) Have a ceremony to celebrate the arrival of the new bin! Pass round cupcakes. I mean embarrass the socks off them.

Ah and don't forget the office 'walk of shame' when as a woman you suddenly need to take your handbag with you to the loo...
Interestingly we had a long discussion in work related to Gender neutral toilets and toilet spaces in general related to theatres and galleries yesterday.

I'm tempted to take ever ridiculously sized bags with me too, starting with a handbag, working up to a rucsack and maybe a suitcase...just to mess with people!!

See: anytime a celeb gets involved in a charity campaign. Cries of 'why don't you give them the money yourself!?!' The idea that maybe they already do so but don't advertise it doesn't cross their tiny minds.

I always assume that women carry their handbags everywhere and if it's to the loo then it's to freshen up the makeup. I would never draw the conclusion being discussed here. I doubt if most men would.

As I’m back I thought I might as well resurrect one of my own threads (self promo and all that). I probably said it before but the Apollo needs to improve the men’s facilities. If the Upper Circle (or whatever they call it) is closed, there is only one cubicle in the Stalls Bar toilets. Sort it out Theatre Overlords.

One set of ladies toilets at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay have an award for toilet of the year, I mean what an achievement!
