Announcement just been made that David Lan is leaving the Young Vic next year after nearly two decades in charge.
Place your bets for next AD now...

Ooooh.
Marianne Elliott would be my first choice.
Outside bet on Rufus Norris...?

Emma Rice is certainly going to be at a loose end fairly soon, though for all I defend her as Globe AD, I don't know that she'd be right for the YV...

Well. I suppose I could give it a go.

Wonder what he'll do next? Wasn't it a fairly open secret that he'd applied for the NT job?

Wonder what he'll do next? Wasn't it a fairly open secret that he'd applied for the NT job? He already has another job as an AD in New York. Give the job to Robert Icke - give a young person the job for a change rather than a middle-aged person like Emma Rice. Pity Lan's going, brilliant producer (but a mediocre director and writer).

Tom Morris? The final stage of the Bristol Old Vic redevelopment is well under way, so he could now honourably feel free to leave Bristol.

How about someone like Lyndsey Turner? Well respected and certainly someone who would push female talent in the theatre further.

Really sad about this, although it is not a surprise. The Young Vic is quite unique among the theatres in London in terms of variety in the programming. I hope that will not be lost with a new director.

Not all ADs need be active directors, a producer-type may be better for the Young Vic than a director with their own keen personal style and vision.

The Young Vic is a national theatre in miniature. In many ways it fulfils the role of a national theatre more fully than the National Theatre has done in the past. It produces and presents an eclectic programme of plays and musicals. It tours in the UK and internationally. It is open to international theatre practices and works. It supports the development of emerging directors and writers throughout the UK. It is embedded in its local community. It is probably the most important theatre in the UK.

Very classy statement from David, all about the importance of encouraging the younger generation of theatre-makers. Interesting that he doesn't yet have another job lined up.

Re the New York job Jan mentioned - according to wikepedia "Between 2013 and 2015 he was also Consulting Artistic Director of the soon to be built Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center in New York, where he is now an artistic associate."
I was aware of his original appointment but hadn't heard this role had finished.
He was 65 on June 1st which may be connected to this move?
