(is she actually immortal?) No, it just feels like it. I think the POW home is Highgrove.

The next few in line is Charles, then William and then George. So either way, it would be a new King. But I have no doubt the next one we see with the crown will be William if anyone, Charles is getting on a bit amd probably would not be able to fulfill duties in a few years time to the extent he may need too, so he may choose to hand over the crown whilst he can. And unless something dramatic happens to the both of them, George is only 3 at the minute so obviously wouldn't be able to take up the role until 21 (I think? I don't know, that hasn't happened before!).

Could there be a half way house between carrying on and abdication? Could the Queen "retire" on health grounds and Charles take over as Regent?

Abdication in favour of Charles Can't they simply skip one generation, or would Charles have to abdicate himself first to make William king? Not sure - my entire knowledge of the protocol in this area comes from the works of Shakespeare - based on that I suppose they can do whatever they want.

I'm guessing he would have to as well. I'm sure there's a process for 'rejecting' the appointment pre-coronation, but I think he'd have to be appointed and step down (albeit in fairly quick succession) rather than them just announcing it's going straight to William. Isn't that what Edward when he decided to prefer Wallis Simpson to the crown? Sadly most of my knowledge of that is based on the Netflix-Show "The Crown" but I remember him saying something to young Liz how he never got a coronation ceremony. Could there be a half way house between carrying on and abdication? Could the Queen "retire" on health grounds and Charles take over as Regent? Possibly. I don't see why she can't retire like the Dutch Queen Beatrix did. Beatrix is still pootling around somewhere, but her son is now officially King and runs things. I know (your) Queen once said that she wouldn't do that, that job was "for life" but man, the old lady has deserved some rest.

That is the other thing, she is 91 and Philip is 95, if she wants a sit down and a cup of tea on a cruise she really has earned it! My Mum was relieved when a death wasn't announced, she says Philip is her favourite, always smiling, never says anything, doesn't bother anyone, just goes about his day.

I think it's wonderful watching the tabloids' websites desperately trying to outdo each other in their attempts to find something to say.

Your mum is right, except he says things like "slit eyes". The Duke said to Tom Jones after a Royal Variety Performance: "What do you gargle with, pebbles?". The Duke famously proclaimed: "British women can't cook". But his best must be, when talking about Princess Anne "If it doesn't fart or eat hay then she isn't interested". So yes, he just goes about his day!!!!!

One would not be amused if one was woken for that.

Funny to watch the media/social media getting so worked up over something so utterly banal.
Whatever you think of old Phil, he *is* 95. He's put in more than enough time and is entitled to a bit of retirement.

Wasn't that just a pre-death announcement? Today he's stepping down, next week he will be dead? He wasted his life, bet he's gutted
