I also think it looks way to basic... They could have used some projections at least... If you look at that bad quality iPhone video it looks like she's just waving her arms while singing. But if you listen to the audio it sounds like there are some sound effects that suggest there's more happening. Maybe we just can't see that because of the bad video quality. I love the glittery curtain though. But the moment that really made me laugh (and not in a good way) was when she took her hair clip out and just tossed it over her shoulder. I mean really? This looks so weird. Sven looks great. It's basically the hyena costume from the lion king but it looks pretty effective. And Olaf looks well... just like Olaf. I think it's better than someone in a costume. I guess it will be really successful, no matter what. Frozen has a massive fan base. My niece is just a little older than the film and she has been a fan forever. She's still wearing her hair like Elsa and she has that dress that she wears all the time. The fandom never seems to end for that movie...

just saw both Videos, the one with Cassie and the Hyperion - well, both are good but not perfect in my opinion the dress change is waaaaaaay better in the Cassie version, the background with all the glittering ice and projections is better in the Hyperion one. But i don't miss the staircase - it is driving me nuts, and that after one time viewing it, all that turning, urgh and to be honest, all that running up and down the staircase does not do the singing any favour, not a fan of the Hyperion Elsa combine the 2 or something

It probably still will because it's Disney, and no matter what the show itself will be very popular. Hamilton also got nominated for set design (and won I think), while in my opinion that set is incredibly boring. It was nominated but She Loves Me won. I agree, Hamilton wouldn't of deserved that set award at all, She Loves Me set deserved it, that set was amazing! Whilst Hamilton's is quite static and doesn't really do much. The most impressive part is the revolve, but even then it is only impressive these days because of the choreography done upon it. It won't win that award in London either, I imagine based on what has already opened, it will be 42nd Street or Angels in America for the win with that one.

The Hamilton set wouldn't have been a deserving winner (especially against She Loves Me), but it's a great fit-for-purpose set design. Accurate to Colonial America in which the truth is things weren't very pretty or visually beautiful.
It deserved the nomination, it's not as basic as it seems on first glance:

Just saw the bootleg. Can't believe they went for a minimalistic approach. Disney made the wrong decision here. It looks like a panto with a show cloth at the end of a pier 1989 not Frozen on Broadway 2018!! We need hydraulics, magic, effects and a wow moment! I am very disappointed. The theme park version is better!!

I meant the theme park Hyperion Frozen in California is superb.
The bootleg Denver pre Broadway try out is pants with an old fashioned show cloth!

Maybe they haven't built the full set for the out of town run?

Maybe they haven't built the full set for the out of town run? That's highly unlikely. Most out of town tryouts are there just to iron out the content of the show and the technical elements. Design wise, save some details here and there like costumes, wigs, it's pretty much the final product. Out of town is used to iron out flow and transitions, when it comes to scenery. It's not completely impossible that they might change SOME set pieces before Broadway, but it'll be because they decide to. It's definitely not "oh, we had this in mind for Broadway but we're not ready to build it for the out of town". And is it only me or does Elsa's blue Let It Go costume look like those competitive skating outfits?

Everyone crying on here and Broadway World during the previews of Charle & the Chocolate Factory and its lack of spectacle and very diminished set, trying to justify that more set would appear once the show had opened. As with Charlie, lots of critical comment and vocal dislike on the forums but I imagine the tickets will sell on brand alone. Its a shame because that makes two massive shows on soon to be running on Broadway simultaneously with a lack decent production value, churning away for the sake of family ticket sales.

churning away for the sake of family ticket sales. On the other hand, on just one day, just one small boy or girl will be sitting somewhere in the audience. Something will "click" with them - and 20 years later we will be acclaiming them as the biggest star on Broadway. Add thousands more who will simply discover that theatregoing is a pleasure, and it isn't all bad. Ah yes. Just like that famous story of Ben Platt watching Whistle Down the Wind in 1997 and realising thats what he wanted to do with his life. And to be a bit of a stickler, I wonder how many people leave the Lunt Fontaine after CATC thinking that experience was a pleasure. haha

I do wonder if it is possible they've had a bit of a technical mess-up with whatever set was planned for Let It Go - as I agree that it is very underwhelming at the moment. Pardon the costume change (which is slick), but her first dress is terrible.
However, I'm more confused by the ending line of the song. They seem to have ramped it up into a full on Defying Gravity style belt moment, whereas the original spoken lyric probably would have more impact.
Overall, it feels very much like "big panto" (think Shrek on their London set, rather than the Broadway), rather than anything with impact/spectacle.

I just saw the production photos and it looks pretty mega-musical to me. From what I gather, it seems to have a lot more artistic integrity than Aladdin with all its orientalist vomit Disney glory.

I've read a few review roundups.
I'm actually surprised by the level of maturity and how well the press conducted themselves. Normally they're just out to be catty and snarky when they are being critical, but I actually thought they were extremely objective and offered very valuable and genuine feedback to the creative team, almost saying, if you doctor it enough before it goes to Broadway, you should have a hit.

The press are being supportive and giving decent analysis as to what could improve the piece as it currently stands. There's several months before Broadway, but that'll go by in a flash. It'll be interesting to see what they tinker with between now and then.

So what - if it does not look great on a grainy mobile phone video.
I cannot see why you all getting your knickers in a twist, some of you just need to let it go.

A full, rather high-quality video of Let It Go is up on YT. A bit disappointing in terms of staging, but Caissie is wonderful and I hope they have a few more tricks up their sleeve for Broadway. Already booked for May, can't wait!

Really surprising but its still there a full 24 hours later. Search for Musicales random, randomly lol. Caissie is nothing short of phenomenal, and maybe the set looks more impressive irl,it gets a round of applause as its revealed on the video. Disney theatricals out of town tryouts have never historically done this, the sets are usually the same, but I can't help but agree with everyone saying they could be holding something big back for broadway. Even if they're not That number should be about the space around Elsa anyway and being alone on a big desolate mountain, then coming to terms with and testing out her powers,so I'm happy with whatever they decide. That amazing costume change certainly provides a wow moment, even if you can tell how its done. I also love how they've defying gravity- ised the ending line, sends Act 1 out with a bang, might be a bit anti climactic spoken as in the movie. Really looking forward to seeing this (twice!) on my big broadway holiday next May! xx
