Cheers dears! Thanks for the company. Still a bit confused by what just happened but I must sleep soon.

They will probably have to do an official statement though, because why did they give Warren an envelope that said La La Land? He walked on holding the envelope then another person brought on a different envelope.

I would imagine so. Would love to know exactly what happened in the build up to that moment.

So bizarre. He said he had an Emma Stone envelope (and made Faye Dunaway glance at it for a second to announce the winner). Someone is probably being shouted at right now.

Sorry it sounds over the top, but if I had been told I had won an Oscar, in front of the whole world, after three hours of high emotion, and got on stage, held it and started thanking my family and loved ones, only to be told it wasn't mine, it was someone elses, I would genuinely throw it at someone. Not the person who did win, and probably not the person who announced my name as I said previously, but I would kick off. It was very classy of them to be kind, but I am not that classy.

Not at all over the top. I would say many people would react like that. It's such a weird situation.

After a pretty uneventful (read predictable and boring) night, they injected some jeopardy at the last minute. What a twist!!

I keep watching it back and I am still stunned by what I am seeing. Like, this is a thing that really happened.

Seriously, Warren Beatty, you're an old white man, the demographic absolutely guaranteed to be listened to seriously if you want to just take the microphone and say "sorry everyone, I'm not sure this is the right envelope, can we double-check please?". Though at least you hesitated, Faye Dunaway.... oops.
I liked Emma Stone's post-snafu interview, though someone may wish to let her know there are two copies of each envelope...

Am sure there will be more on this but apparently: There are two sets of envelopes for each category as the presenters may enter from either side. Beatty was handed the extra 'Best Actress' envelope rather than Best Film one. When he opened it it said Emma Stone for LaLaLand. He knew something was wrong, so showed it to Dunaway, who, thinking he was messing around for comic effect, read out 'LalaLand.' As the LalaLand people approached the stage you can hear Beatty saying 'but it said Emma Stone.' Felt a bit bad for everyone - lots of Twitter stuff about Beatty not being able to read or being too old, etc. which is unfair. The Twitter sleuths have already enlarged the envelope Beatty was holding which says 'Best Actress in a Leading Role' on the outside. What's impressive is how classy both the 'Moonlight' and 'LalaLand' people were about it. Vanity Fair, as always, has some fun, online coverage of the ceremonies.

Really unfair if Beatty starts getting a lot of backlash for it- I've only seen clips but quite clearly he was reading and re-reading and looking a bit confused, then as Foxa says Dunaway took it and read it (no disrespect to her, in the heat of the moment it was a fair assumption to quick read the title and announce, I know I wouldn't do any better under pressure)
I mean ultimately a cock up but nobody died, and everyone stayed classy. (and *cough cough* the better film did actually win). Is this the first time in Oscars history such a thing has happened does anyone know?

Just woke up to a very confusing BBC headline - sounds as if I missed the drama! After all the interviews the counting team gave earlier in the week about how meticulous their preparations are it's a shocking mistake to make, but both the La La Land and Moonlight teams dealt with it well, and neither would have been an undeserving winner. Just watched Viola Davis's speech - what a classy, brilliant woman she is. So well deserved, and the audience reaction said it all. So glad she is now Academy Award winner Viola Davis! Mahershala Ali also gave a great speech, and I'm pleased for Emma Stone, she was wonderful in La La Land. Lots of lovely dresses as well - Emma, Viola, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Alicia Vikander and Taraji P Henson all looked stunning.

I just watched it on YouTube.
For such a (generally) slick production that is screened to millions across the world, the fact that such a monumental error could occur is unacceptable. I'm sure that somewhere head will roll and someone will be out of a job.
That said, it's reassuring that even the best can get it wrong.

My thought is if you obviously know you have the wrong envelope say so rather than just make something up.

My thought is if you obviously know you have the wrong envelope say so rather than just make something up. In fairness, the actual card on the indside doesn'r say the catagory, it just says, as the inital card he had "Emma Stone - La La Land". So he didn't make anything up, he read what he was given. And with that amount of pressure, Warren would of safely assumed any idiot backstage would of done their job right and given him the correct envelope. ... adn that person who gave him the envelope is the person I would of murdered if it were me.

The dignity displayed by both sides in a very awkward situation is something special. I felt for Warren Beatty at the time as he clearly wasn't 100% sure what he was reading was correct.

Well fair enough. Just watched the you tube clip in full. They took an awful long time to stop what was going on. A couple of minutes into the speech at least. Still makes good watching.

On the Moonlight card which is snatched out of Warren Beatty's hand and shown to the audience by the La La Land producer, it quite clearly states at the bottom 'Best Picture'. This would suggest that all the cards have the name of the category at the bottom. I'm with alec: if you are not sure, check! Certainly good material for the next Specsavers advert!

Do they have the category on the front of the envelope? Just asking. Haven't watched. And I expect next year we will see different coloured envelopes 😂😂

Oh if it does then my boo boo.
But, to defend Warren for a moment, he can't be to blame for this. Could he of handled this better, yes, but someone handed him the wrong envelope. He didn't pick it up hk self someone gave it to him and told him to get onstage. There probably wasn't time for him to even check the front as there is about a minute of turnaround from award to award, he was nervous too. And, with the world watching, and the Oscars thought to never of made such a cock up he probably just assumed that this doesn't look right but they gave it to me mentality.
I did watch an interview with Emma afterward however, and she said that she had the card saying Best Actress in her hand at the time it happened. So whether they have doubles, which is not needed as there wasn't two hosts for Best Actress, then someone could potentiallt of done it on purpose.

Do not though, there is a rule somewhere with the Oscqrs that once the person presenting the award has the envelope, it is their job to keep track of it u til they hand it over, along with the Oscar, to the winner. By this consenus, it would be Emma or Leonardo's fault for either leaving the envelope aside, which didn't happen as Emma had it in her hand. Which would lead to thinking their is a double and someone screwed Warren up.
