For those of you who were there talking about sound issues, I don’t think it came across that way on the broadcast. I’m going to see Jamie later this week and hadn’t heard any of the songs before last night. It sounded great to me on the TV so am looking forward to it. I’ve always found the Royal Albert Hall to be quite rubbish for sound for anything other than Classical music. I’ve been to whole pop concerts there and not heard a word the artist said or sang. Always had similar issues with the acoustics in the old Earls Court arena too so I just don’t bother with the RAH any more. There were no sound issues for the Hamilton, Follies or Girl From the North Country performances, it was just Jamie that was unintelligible. I thought the 42nd Street performance almost sounded as if the singers were in a different key to the orchestra - it certainly didn't sound as good as it is at Drury Lane - but they were still perfectly understandable, same with Young Frankenstein.

Performance wise, Clare Halse owned the stage and really slapped every, single person who didn't put her in that catagory. I think and hope that has become universally accepted now. Yes, I am bitter and will be for a while (I hope grudges, Emma Williams and Victoria Hanilton Barritt should og won the past two years, still bitter!). I love Tracie Bennett, shes just nuts but I'm here for it. I thought the Hamilton performance was fine, if a tad dull. It wasn't very exciting but vocally it was great. No, the direction of 42nd Street gave no room for good acting performances. They aimed for something mannered and that will never beat performances of emotional truth like Dee or Henderson. 42nd Street aimed for spectacle and relegated book and story completely, they could have trusted the matrial but they decided to keep an ironic distance. No nominations for acting tells the whole story. That's a very kind description. The night I saw it, with two exceptions - Clare Halse and Jasna Ivir - the performances were robotic and utterly charmless.

The Hamilton performance was an odd choice. Some of the 42nd Street dancing was very ungainly. The Follies performance was horrendous.
I thought Sheila Atim had a gorgeous voice.

Forgot to say, Catherine Tate should not come back as host. (Let’s not mention the dress.)

Presumably the rehearsals were for choreography reasons though? Not sure, although I would have thought part of that would have involved sorting the sound, which in a big ensemble piece, is going to be more complex than some of the solos performed

Why did Hamilton choose that of all numbers to perform, have they discussed it at all? It just seemed an odd choice when you would surely want to highlight all the nominees and do a medley. The King didn't get a moment and he won, and Rachel being the only female nominee didn't even get a look in which I find very odd.

This may be a daft question but why is Tracie Bennett's performance being criticised? Just curious.

I would have felt Schuyler Sisters would have been a much better choice given that it showcases both Burr and Angelica.

But based on last night, I'm still not a fan of Giles voice for that role really so I would of rather he sang less and everyone got equal footing (even though he won haha).

It was to get the opening number and name of the show embedded into the punters' puny brains - sell, sell, sell..

Much consternation on Twitter as it seems Peter Hall was missed off the In Memoriam section... And rightly so. Surely he should have been the "headliner" (final face) of the montage. Nobody else on that list was as prolific in terms of London theatre.

I was surprised at how poor the diction was during the Hamilton extract. I guess it could have been the sound - but that wasn't the impression I got. Just was lacking the same punch I have seen different ensembles give at US events.
I really don't have FOMO with Hamilton. I love the score but am just not buying into the hype for the London production.

All I have to say is Bat out of Hell sounded infinitely better than Hamilton. They achieved some incredible results with the Sound Design at BOOH, so it's a shame the great big popularity contest swept up in this area. Nothing worse than somebody winning or being nominated just because they are the most popular and yet one knows it goes on year after year. People who knowingly cultivate members of SOLT in order to gain their votes must actually feel pretty empty and low when they are continually nominated regardless of the quality of their work.

I'm sad that Jamie didn't win anything, as John was the biggest bet for them and kind of got sidelined because of Hamilton (which I feel weird saying because I haven't seen it), but it would of been nice to see him take that as representation of the show.
Also, Girl From the North Country should of won Achievement in Music in my opinion. Hamilton is great, but it felt very much "Lin is in the catagory, Lin must win" kind of situation, whereas the music for Girl was really outstanding, both from a Orchestral and Vocal perspective.

I’ve seen both shows and as many people on the board here know, I’m a massive fan of Jamie. Having said that, out of the 5 nominations, I felt that the only one they really deserved to win was Best Leading Actor. Don’t get me wrong, Giles is a fantastic actor, but for best leading actor in a musical, you need to be an all rounder. I didn’t enjoy Giles’ singing voice at times and I felt his diction was a little off at places in the show. It’s a shame really

What makes Sir Peter Hall's omission even stranger is that they included John Barton in the memorial segment and many people of my generation associate John Barton with Peter Hall and their production of "The Wars of the Roses."

The problem with that category is that it's a bit like nominating an apple, a pear, a satsuma, and a mango for an award for Best Banana. This year, there were two nominations for original scores, one for orchestrations/vocal arrangements, and one for an orchestra. All four were outstanding, but they aren't all the same thing. As much as I loved the arrangements in 'Girl from the North Country', I think I'd probably have given the award to one of the nominees whose work involved original composition - and as much as I loved 'Everybody's Talking About Jamie', as writing, between it and 'Hamilton', there's no contest.
