I'd of loved a third part, possibly of actually what happened after the jail sentence, so the final part be of Karen leaving prison and being shunned from the community. But I caught the second episode last night and it was really emotionally draining. It is actually scary how realistic that leading actress was, and Sheridan really brought it out of the bag with this performance, as did the woman playing Natalie! But that actress who played Karen, her performance was scarily accurate, it was a stunning portrayal!

She's great in Game of Thrones too, and wiki is telling me she is a stand-up comic, a mezzo soprano, and was in the West End transfer of One man Two Guvnors! I expect we'll be seeing a lot more of her.

Strangely I thought it was the cast around Sheridan Smith that impressed more than she did. Obviously she was the "lead" and she was good in it but it was a very Sheridan Smith-by-numbers role/performance and she didn't really stray outside of that formula but some of the others in the cast were really terrific.

Same here. Gemma Whelan was brilliant, as was the actress who played Natalie. It did annoy me a bit that excuses were being made for Karen Matthews. Nothing was said, for example, about her having drugged her daughter for several months before the 'abduction'. Which goes against the 'pathetic woman who'd been abused by others all her life, hence her being easily manipulated into committing the crime' argument that was made for her in court by Julie. I'd have been interested to see Julie's reaction to being told (or hearing) about the long-term drugging.

I couldn't believe when I read she was Kate in Upstart Crow. Was she??? Stone me, she's good. I know. I read it last night and woke up this morning thinking it couldn't be true and I'd dreamt it, so I had to check again.

Best TV I've seen in a long while. Full marks to the actress playing Karen Matthews.
I'm not a huge Sheridan Smith fan but I thought she was brilliant in this.

Plus, if Sheridan gains another BAFTA nomination for her performance which she does get whenever she is in something high profile like this, and I rarely say this when Sheridan is in the category, but unless the actress playing Karen is put into supporting, as she isn't in it as much as Sheridan, then Sheridan will be beaten and rightly so by her. I rarely get amazed by a performance on TV but her portrayal of Karen was chilling. Sheridan was fantastic as always but wow.

Thought it was a bit lame, car crash tv so I had to carry on watching. Don't know what I wanted, probably less Karen Matthews like the producer promised. Thought there might have been a story then. Horrible story so I am not sure what they could have done to make a very good drama. Not for me this one.

God knows what they were giving her that for. Not hard to imagine dreadful things though.

Temazepam is also used as an anti-anxiety drug.

I believe they found traces of the drug by testing the child's hair, and it was estimated that she'd been given it over a period of 18 months. She was also tethered in the uncle's flat. Abuse on a large scale. Dreadful indeed...

Late to the party on this one... Watched both parts back to back and found the whole thing fascinating. I remember the story from when it happened.
Great TV Drama and it should definitely pick up some awards!

For those of you interested in the real story behind the drama, there was a documentary on C5 last night which was surprisingly well done, albeit with a very annoying soundtrack! Not sure I buy the real Julie's story; Julie likes a little bit too much limelight for my liking.

That's exactly what I thought. Wanting access to the police files because she thinks she would make a better job of working out if there was an accomplice? Sit down dear, it's not about you.

She did seem a bit obsessed with the whole thing, and with making it about her. I wish the media would stop encouraging her. The best thing for all concerned would be for this case to fade into history, so that Shannon can get on with her life without having constant reminders when she picks up a newspaper or watches TV.
Incidentally, I noticed that either Julie herself or the voice-over stated that the meeting with Karen in the police vehicle was Julie's idea - I'm sure that in the drama, it was portrayed as being Natalie's.
