Our central library in brighton seems ok. Modern building, well thought out and stocked. Our local library also in a new building now is ok, the card gives access 24 hours a day which is a nice touch

I despair of humanity sometimes and pretty much look like my avatar at the moment. "We consider the human body a biochemical facility whose production rate can be optimized by clever forms of biohacking" must be the worst sentence I've ever translated. All that to flog overpriced sugarpills. Would they know if you translated it as 'we're trying to use pseudo-scientific rubbish like 'biohacking' to flog you overpriced sugar pills'?? Afraid so  Dutch and German aren't that different. |

My local library had a limit of 4 for children, so I'd just get several out on my mum's card as well. It's a nice little library, very conveniently located for my house, but the opening hours have been getting less and less so I just don't get in there anymore. |

You were only allowed 4 books? Yes, it was 4 on a child ticket, 6 on an adult ticket. I think it is still only 8, even now. Lucky you live in a more enlightened place, Dawnstar. Well, in numbers allowed anyway. Amazed that a seat of learning can side-line its public libraries as you describe. Our central library in brighton seems ok. I (and I'm sure others on here) envy you, infofreako. BTW, did I mention my nearest library, built at great expense in the early 90s, and recently fully refurbished due to flooding, is now set to be demolished to provide an access road to a proposed Marks and Spencer supermarket - which is in turn being built on a closing-due-to-cuts Elderly and Special Needs day centre and care unit? That's awful. Sounds like pretty savage cuts where you are. I don't use the library anywhere near as much as I should. |

I have two Easter eggs sitting behind me and I'm trying to resist the temptation to start eating them. Somehow it feels wrong to eat an Easter egg before the holiday has started, even though the eggs themselves don't care either way. I included a Lindt chocolate bunny in my grocery shop delivered last Saturday. It was gone by Sunday evening. Oops! |

Day going good so well! I've managed to sort out the last arrangements for my early Edinburgh-London flight tomorrow. Plan is: wake up a 4:30 am, go to the airport, buy some haggis for my friend, get to London, get to the London office, off to see my friend, then Audra, then back at my friends for some sleep. Friday I'll work from the London office, get to the airport to get my late flight, get to Edinburgh, wait an hour at the airport for my parents who are flying from Poland to spend Easter with me and my boyf.
I'm glad I could share this with you.

(What I like about Language Log's coverage of poor translations is that they try to work out what went wrong rather than just playing "laugh at the silly foreigner". In some cases I suspect there's a certain amount of deliberate but plausible screwing up in order to get publicity.) |

My husband has the restraint of a saint and spins his chocolate egg out for days "I can't eat much as it's so rich and filling" ....looking at me like I am some lunatic as I snarf mine in one sitting! I have long thought that it is a good job he funds my theatre habit to make up for this unfortunate character defect! |

Just seen a screening of Their Finest at the BFI followed by a Q&A that included (amongst other) Gemma Arterton, Bill Nighy and Helen McCrory: the film is recommended but let me be the one to start the campaign for Bill Nighy to do a musical after his singing in this 😛

Oh cars! Michael I feel your pain. This morning I had 4 new tyres and a light bulb. Mind you, it's still only half the price that my dentist trip this afternoon is going to cost. But what I'm most upset about is ruining a brand new jumper this morning when I, very carefully, stitch by stitch, cut out the ticket. Why do they make those things out of brillo pads? Scratch scratch scratch...... |

I was chatting to a friend in Florida last year about dentists. Her husband had a root canal and bridge done - at a cost of just under $10,000. Considering that a root canal treatment takes about half an hour that's a rate of over $300 a minute. How can they think that's a reasonable charge? For $10,000 I'd want a bridge over an actual canal. |

For $10,000 I'd want a bridge over an actual canal. So if I multiply the 2 separate hours it took by the amount I paid, then......um.....six nines are 72, carry 1, divide by 120, it comes to ....um....lots per minute... (Still cheaper than USA prices I think!) |

Our IT department had all fevked off home by 3pm today for the long weekend and sure enough 5 minutes later we lost our network connection.
With no IT Support till Tuesday muggins here had to investigate or tomorrow we'd all be sitting twiddling our thumbs.
I could see that the Hub that connects us to the network had no power - so spent far too long crawling under desks to find cables and plugs and what not to see if they were actually plugged in. Eventually finding out that one of the plums in the office had stood on the on/off switch for the Hub and switched all the power off.
Sometimes I despair of the people I work with.
