For an aero-geek like me all of that sounds fascinating kathryn, let me know how you get on I'm not using Avios, but I've recently come to appreciate the joys of Business Class without being able to afford it, so I'm already looking at ways to get more upgrades. One thing I wonder (though I guess it's too late now) is whether it might have been easier to just book LHR-SYD SYD-LHR on your vouchers and book SYD-AKL AKL-SYD separately in Economy? You'd add one extra flight (SYD-AKL) but on the whole it may be less complicated?

As far as I can tell the only way BA's Avios work for you is to knock down the price of the flight by a couple of hundred or so, max. Getting an upgrade out of Economy is virtually impossible. It's more possible to get an upgrade from Premium Economy to Business but then you have to pay Premium Economy prices, which are extortionate.

I have no wisdom to add to airline chatter. I just have bitter muttering about when you just KNOW a rejection is personal. *mutter mutter in a corner*

Unless I'm lucky and it pops up as available some time when I'm randomly checking. It hasn't worked, by the way - the cancelled flight hasn't turned back up as available (or at least, I haven't sen it pop back up - haven't been able to check constantly as had a meeting). Ho hum.

For short haul economy flights it can work really well, but long-haul, yeah, the availability is a big issue on a lot of routes. They've changed the scheme a couple of times to make it more expensive - Avios is actually a very profitable business in itself, not a way of rewarding loyalty any more. I may end up paying cash for a Qatar flight out of Oslo/Copenhagen in a sale, and use the voucher and avios for a New York trip sometimes - there's always plenty of availability to New York.

Dear Person Wot Works in a Shop Near Me,
When I try on a size 5 and politely say "It's a little bit small, do you have a 5 and a half please?" I really don't need to sit there and listen to a diatribe on my being The Only Person Evaaaaahhhhh to find this shoe comes up small and am I sure I know my size (even though I'd say it's pretty obvious that I have been wearing shoes for the past 127 years?)
I thank you. (And I hope you work on commission you total utter twonk.)

(And I hope you work on commission you total utter twonk.) so that I can do a "Pretty Woman" and sweep by tomorrow, carrying lots of bags and say, "you work on commission? Big mistake, huge." a) I've always wanted to do that. b) Monkey can quote Pretty Woman. I don't know why but this amuses and pleases me in equal measure.

a) me too. b) I have my reasons. a) Maybe there's a theatre setting this can be done in. b) Even more intrigued. (still impressed)

a) me too. b) I have my reasons. Is the Monkey secretly involved with that mooted project to adapt Pretty Woman for the stage? Hmm, anyone on the creative team working under the pseudynym chimp or gorilla or orang utang...?

Booked a £20 secret seat for Pirates of Penzance at the ENO tonight - first time I'd tried it and Dress Circle centre Row E will do very nicely, thank you!

I seem to have given myself an ear infection which has left me giddy and sensitive to noise, so probably not the best situation for a day full of meetings. Hopefully I'll be able to get through them without shouting at everyone to just shut up!

Just seen a guy who, instead of navigating the streets using maps on a smart phone, was finding his way around Victoria using only a compass. Proper old school! Excellent start to the day!

I saw a scaffolding truck with the name 'St Georges Scaffolds' on the way to work which amused me greatly.
Very slow day already today...yawn.

It's only a matter of time before we see the iCompass, that hooks into your phone's GPS with Bluetooth and costs £120 and runs for 90 minutes before the battery goes flat. Isn't technology wonderful?

Watched Me Before You. Loved it. The first time I can remember the film not making a hash of the book. (Yes, I'm looking at you One Day, The DaVinci Code, Titanic.....oh.....er.....)

After a mention of Haribo earlier I went out to buy some, but I ended up buying 200g of crystallised ginger instead. Then I read through 96 pages of the Wicked discussion gathering statistics. So now both my mouth and my brain are melting.

Its very quiet here this evening.
I'm pondering an offer of employment that's come out of nowhere and would cause a great deal of upheaval in regards to personal life but be lucrative financially.
Do I follow that path for 4 or 5 years and set myself up for some time to come or do I keep searching for something I will enjoy

Got screamed at by a woman, then her mother, then a random passer by in a shop... Well then she calls her mother over, who started shouting, all culminating in the immortal line "DO YOU HAVE CHILDREN?" Oy, Oy, Oy.... Gawd 'elpus........... I had two boys, and they never made a nuisance of themselves in public places. It's really not that difficult...

Planted some fruit bushes and shrubs in what we like to call our garden. Our lawn is well, not a lawn really but just a continuation of the hill we're built into so I've just ordered a load of wildflower plugs to turn the steepest part into a wildflower 'meadow' so I don't have to risk bodily injury trying to push the mower up there again....

Oh, I don't like work buffets as there's never anything healthy to eat and I worry about who has handled the food, etc. But others always seemed to seize upon everything and anything.

Almost the end of the work day here. I have been walking over and on ice-glazed sidewalks. Work is fine. I need a nap. The end.

What could have been a catastrophically bad week was rescued, as it so often is, by theatre... some Franco-American dance, a few Pirates and tonight a touch of Murder. My sincere thanks to all those whose artistic endeavours quite possibly saved a soul this week.

Killed time in London yesterday evening before Much Ado About Nothing started by visiting my favourite Charing Cross Road secondhand bookshop. In hindsight that my have been a mistake! I ended up buying 10 1910s-20 annual, which are all large hardbacks, and had to then carry them home to Cambridge. My arm & shoulder muscles are very sore today!
