Ooh, I'd never thought of that, andrew - I must be too trusting but indeed it could just be a sneaky trick to get more publicity for the app and the production.

Interestingly, I had a fairly swift response from Todaytix support, not answering my question (not sure whether that was deliberate evasion or simply oversight), but mentioning in passing that 1400 people had entered the Dreamgirls ticket lottery today alone.  Explains why it's so hard to win and inclines me to give up trying, so slim does that make the chance of winning.

I'm not keen on Todaytix either, claireyfairy1, for the reasons you cite and also because as with so many apps, they demand ridiculous levels of access to your personal details - what possible need can they have to access your photos, for instance?

I really regret the loss of old-style day-seating and only resort to Todaytix if I want to see something and it is the only way to try to get a day seat. Though so far it hasn't worked for me and it makes it hard to plan your day as you need to have a back-up in mind; also, if, as lots of us here do, you see several things in one day, you risk missing an alert to say you have won because your phone is off as you are seeing a matinee of something else and have entered the lottery for an evening show.

It's probably win-win for the venues as they get so much publicity; they know they can sell all their day seats and they don't even have to cover the staffing cost - though most Box Offices do of course open at 10 am for normal counter sales.

As I don't live in London, having access to dayseats through TodayTix is great. Never won the lottery either (only entered a few times). And it's not all they do anyway - they have an allocation of full price and discounted seats, just like any other agency. I tend to use them in preference to lastminute (who have a similar selection) as you know the seat when booking with todaytix.

I don't know about matinees but for evening shows it's normally four hours notice.

Not just Kinky Boots. They have offered cut price tickets to unsuccessful lottery entrants for some Branagh season and Lazarus. Seems a good way for theatres to unload last minute unsold seats.

I can't say if the second entry for tweeting definitely gives you an extra chance but I have won for Kinky Boots Matinee. I hate that you have to confirm within a certain window as I was at London Dungeon and luckily saw the notification as I was leaving (no signal inside even if you were allowed phones without getting your head chopped off). I know some people might make other plans while waiting but I wish there was a way to pre-approve the payment if you're sure.

That's weird. What if people turn it down? Don't they draw someone else?

So, obviously I'm speculating here, but what I gather is that they select a large number of losers first, then start narrowIng the list down somehow. I think they select some backup winners, like a wait list. Sometimes I've gotten my "Better luck next time" 2 hours to curtain - in those cases I assume I was on the backup list, but nobody forfeited their ticket. One time they actually called me to offer a forfeited lotto ticket AFTER they'd already sent me a rejection. Not so sure what happened there.
