As a current Hull resident of 2 and a bit years I thought it might be nice to start a thread that highlights Hulls year in the spotlight. It has a bad rep, but I can honestly say I've never had a problem here. I intend to take part in as many of the events as possible. With partnerships with the likes of the RSC it's going to be a good year, starting with the premier of Richards Beans new play- The Hypocrite. The city centre is buzzing right now, I fully recommend you come and experience it for yourself sometime this year. Take a look at the website to see all that's going on www.hull2017.co.uk

I'm tempted to make the trip at some point. Website is completely impenetrable though - seems to be no way of (eg) listing all theatre shows or all art exhibitions during the year, other than listing everything that's on every day which is impossible to navigate.

I managed to dig it out but I do admit it's hard. Only the first 3 months of the year have been announced so far. With Hull New theatre closed until atleast the summer, Hull Truck theatre website may be your best port of call or for art the Ferens Art Gallery which has just reopened and I believe is hosting the turner prize this year if that's your thing.

I've chosen to visit Hull a few times & thought it was a great place; just a very long way for anyone who lives south of London as I do. I knew about it being City Of Culture this year + had looked at the events, but though there are plays which sound interesting + new developments in the town since I last visited, I'm not sure whether I'll manage to plan a weekend visit from home. Doing it when already on holiday in the north of the country would probably make more sense.

I'm heading up over the first May bank holiday weekend, so if anyone wants to drop any hot tips or advice my way, it'd be much appreciated.

Ah, OK, so there should be more announced for Hull Truck later in the year then? I would probably go up during the Turner Prize show. Having the New Theatre closed for most of the year of culture seems like very bad planning on somebody's part! Not been to Hull for years but it's a very nice city, the snooty dismissal of the capital of culture from people who've never been there is getting very tired. Key point people miss is that the capital of culture badge is about regeneration, not about choosing the "most cultural city" in the UK. I think the website is the same as the one used for the Brighton Festival, which is similarly impossible to use!

Having the New Theatre closed for most of the year of culture seems like very bad planning on somebody's part It closed this time last year after the panto was finished but work didn't really get started properly until around May time. Think there were problems with the plans and then unexpected funding issues. But it's looking good last time I walked past. The new main entrance extension is in place and they are currently building the new fly tower and backstage area. Hopefully it will attract the larger tours when it's all done.

I'm from Beverley so I am naturally interested in the programme
Art wise the first 3 months looks really good. But I doubt I will travel especially for it
Theatre wise is a bit flat
The main theatre not taking pieces due to a refurb is a disaster
