I haven't watched this, but from the comments I gather the final t and n in the title should be swapped. Well if you had watched it you wouldn't be so nice......... (But good spot!)

Is there a public vote at all in this show? Probably in the later stages.

I was really excited about the concept of having another musical theatre casting show, but this one doesn't seem to be musical theatre at all. Despite the fact that some of the judges mentioned going into theatres a few times, I don't get the theatre vibe. So far this just seems to be "let's find the new Take That".
However, I still hope it gets good ratings because I'm hoping for someone (possibly Gary or ALW again) to cast proper musicals through a TV show again. Wouldn't it be fab to go back to the old format of "I'd do Anything"? Casting Evita or even Finding Neverland through this medium would be fabulous. There's a few ALW gems that haven't been done yet. As I mentioned, Evita or even finding a Grizabella for a revival of Cats (in a few years' time) would be awesome.

Isn't Grizabella just on stage for all of ten minutes though?
It's the most misleading starring role of all time.
Opening scene dance (optional. Only if you fancy it) Look around a bit. Sing memory. Look around a bit more. Sing memory again.

If they did a casting show for Grizabella I'm sure tons of people would audition and lots of people would watch the show.

Just bored with these "talent" shows now. Clearly they shy away from actual musical theatre for some reason. I suspect they think there is a bigger audience with "pop" stuff - but it is a whole different discipline. The guy at the end from Thriller showed everyone up but was too old to be in a "boy" band! But clearly the talent pool is running rather dry! I will not be watching this for 8 weeks!

The guy at the end should be in it imo. He looks young enough. Not if you cast the rest of the band 18 - 22 year olds. I suspect that they will really only cast musical theatre trained pros really who they already have their eye on. Their professional training will be played down. This nonsense of "I've never sung in public before" may well be true, and why not give it a shot for a lark, but they will never get cast in a musical and manage performing 8 shows a week - or no shows a week if you are Amber Riley at the moment.

True. Completely untrained guys would never last 8 shows a week. I really hope they cast pros.

I really like the starway (I think that's what they called it).
When Gary went up to Scarborough you knew that guy was getting through no matter what (wrong boyband). His performance in front of the judges really was not up to scratch but maybe not that many people auditioned.
The last guy was good but it just undermines the whole process really. I know it's prime time BBC One and therefore good promo but really what's the point of anyone without experience applying?

That's because it was a cold night in January, everyone's broke and forgotten where the 'off' button is on their tellys. It was dyslexic carp.

This one may not be as good as the ALW shows, but I just don't want them to completely write off these musical theatre casting shows. Maybe Finding Neverland next year? Some people may not like the show, but at least that will give us real theatre performers.

I'd really love to know what part of it was 'dyslexic' and how/why that's an insult? (I mean I'm not denying it was pretty crap I just fail to see the link there)

Oh sorry. I really didn't mean to offend anyone. It was just my way of saying crap without saying crap....if you see what I mean. Apologies.

That's ok, it just seems 'dyslexic' is one of those insults/groups it's ok to make fun of still. But I fully appreciate the sentiment of 'What the hell is the crap I just watched'
Anyway back to Gary and co...I turned over and watched The Voice...

I watched both Let It Shine and The Voice. Only liked the voice because of Jennifer Hudson otherwise wouldn't watch it. Why the hell did they get that Gavin Rossdale?! They probably blew their budget on Jennifer and Will.I.am!!
Liked the concept of Let it Shine and liked the judges too. It's not a story of Take That musical either I bet shocked some people

At least this is different from X Factor and The Voice in that it's looking for the cast for a musical rather than the next big "forgotten" recording star. I'm afraid I could not name a single person who has won The Voice and the last X Factor name I can remember was Matt Cardle. I don't understand how ITV can run 2 shows almost the same back to back.

The main reason I prefer The Voice is all the contestants have been specifically chosen, as opposed to 'open auditions', so at least everyone who auditions can actually sing, there's no piss-taking of delusional people. Sure, some still don't get through, but maybe it's because they pushed too hard, or weren't their best on the day, or weren't what any of the coaches were looking for, but they still have a voice. Also, the calibre of the panel is SO much higher than X Factor. Sure, I don't know who Gavin Rossdale is, but after some research he's totally qualified to be there. Not all of them have to be 'celebrities' to be good! But Gavin, JHud, Tom Jones and will.i.am....compared to the shambles of Louis Walsh & Sharon Osbourne? Yes please. I find the coaches also actually give useful and important advice on all areas of performance, rather than recycling "you made that song your own" and "you remind me of a young Lenny Henry" a thousand times. That's why I don't understand why they decided to not allow the coaches to turn around if none of them pressed their button. *Some* advice is better than none. Unfortunately though, once the blind auditions and battles etc are over, the live shows turn into a boring mash-up like the rest of them!
I'm hoping Let It Shine might be a reverse.....starts off really boring, but their future stages & possible live shows might actually turn out pretty good! Here's hoping, anyway.

But the format they are using is far better and more suited to looking for a recording star than looking for a theatre performer. I'm no fan of The X Factor or The Voice but at least they know what they need (a good voice) and they're seeking that through suitable methods (vocal auditions of pop songs). To be a musical theatre performer you need an excellent voice and even more importantly you need to be able to be believable as a character. There is not one part of this audition process that lets these guys show that they could be. It just reminds me of when they say to contestants on The X Factor/The Voice 'you should do musical theatre' without actually knowing if they can act to save their life.

I think from the point they are put together in 3 boybands that will battle each other, Let It Shine will get really good.

To be honest, I preferred the ALW shows where you had lots of live shows.
