Dorothy! A new musical of the life, affairs, torment and tragedy of the diva Dorothy Squires who a major star in the 1950's. Her marriage to Roger Moore and her refusal to let him go. Using the songs she had hits with such as "Till", "My Way" "I'm walking behind you".
In 1973 she was charged with high kicking a taxi driver who tried to throw her out of his cab. In 1974 her Bexley mansion burned down, from which she escaped with her dog and all her love letters from Roger Moore. She then moved into a house in Bray which flooded three weeks later.
By 1982 she had been banned from the High Court, and had spent much of her fortune on legal fees. Her litigiousness was so excessive that, on 5 March 1987, the High Court declared her to be a "vexatious litigant", preventing her from commencing any further legal actions without the permission of the Court. In 1988 following bankruptcy proceedings she lost her home in Bray, to which she returned the following night to recover her love letters from Moore. Her last concert was in 1990, to pay her poll tax.
Squires was provided with a home in South Wales by a fan, Esme Coles. Squires retired there a recluse, and died in 1998 of lung cancer, aged 83 It is reported that when terminally ill, Roger Moore went to see Dorothy and on being told of his visit, she opened her eyes, said "that's all right then" and passed away. (Orchestra rises to a crescendo of "Say it with flowers". The curtain falls)
Marvellous!

The Wicker Man - The 1970s film is dark, weird and already has some cracking tunes in it.
Letter To Brezhnev - I could imagine Sheridan Smith as Teresa (played by Margi Clarke in the film)
Dancing Through The Dark (aka Stags & Hens) - Based on the Willy Russell penned film, which already contains some songs.
Joe Meek - The 1960s music producer who brought the world Telstar and eventually descended into madness.

An adaptation of GIRL, INTERRUPTED featuring music by P!nk. An adaptation of WORKING GIRL featuring music by Gwen Stefani and No Doubt. An adaptation of 500 DAYS OF SUMMER featuring music by ELO. And adaptation of DUMBO featuring music by Cher. I also imagine it would be easy to throw in an extra song or two and put LA LA LAND and MOULIN ROUGE! on stage. Im sure Whats on Stage posted that Luhrman was working on a stage adaptation of Moulin Rouge! currently. LaLaLand is inevitable. Working Girl is happening with music by Cyndi Lauper

I've just read "Around the World in 80 Days" and I think it could be a really fun musical.

I wonder if Working Girl will be moved to the present or kept as a period piece? It has potential as a musical although I'm not sure if Cyndi Lauper is the right composer for it, it would be great if they could have Let The River Run in there as it's such a great song.

If not mentioned already, The Breakfast Club or Planes, Trains and Automobiles The Breakfast Club would work superbly as it is set fairly much in a couple of rooms in the school, the film cast was only about 8 characters so you are talking maybe 7 max on stage so overheads would not be high. If they could get rights to the original soundtrack, put the best of that with some new songs then it would be an interesting idea as all the characters had their own back story and they could all have a song each to cover this. The John Hughes film back catalogue could throw up some good ideas.

I don't care what they adapt into a musical so long as it has a tap routine. All shows should have a tap routine.
Well, maybe not 'Sophie's Choice' if they chose to adapt that. Might be a touch inappropriate.

It astounds me there is no Devil Wears Prada musical yet, that seems like it would be stage musical heaven! And the Meryl Streep/Emily Blunt roles are leading lady showcases practically!
Also, don't know if I'm minority, but id love a Sex and The City musical!

Not sure why, but Peter's Friends pops into my head whenever I see this thread.
And whilst I'm no fan of jukebox musicals, if we can have Bat Out Of Hell, we can surely do something with Alice Cooper's catalogue. And Randy Newman's.

Bumping this thread thanks to iTunes. Really not a fan of Jukeboxes, but iTunes on shuffle has today reminded me how I would make an exception for a Mamas & Papas Musical. Perhaps something biographical regarding the life of Cass Elliot.
If anyone wants to work on one with me, shout!

Mamas and Papas is a good idea but whilst they made some great music would there be enough well known material to sustain a full musical. You could include Cass' solo stuff and John Phillips of course wrote San Francisco so you'd not be far off having a workable score and the songs have the ability to be woven into a story easily.

Beetlejuice
Death Becomes Her
Pretty Woman
Devil Wears Pravda
Beaches
Luckily the last three are happening in some form or other.

Definitely have to dig into Cass' back catalogue also. It would be rude not to include 'Make your own kind of music", "Dream a little dream" etc. I think "California Earthquake" would make a really good Act 2 opener.

I would love to write a piece about the life and songs of Stephen Foster - gorgeous powerful songs. And maybe a Scott Joplin piece. and then I have a play about the making of king Kong all ready and raring to go.

If we're talking Mamas and Papas, lets have Beautiful Thing - The Musical Oh god no. Unfamiliar with the film, but on reading the plot on Wiki, no thanks. Not a fan of council estate-centric, middle-class-written drama. If its a Mamas & Papas thing, something 70s, Hair-esque, drug-fueled madness.

It really is a beautiful, funny, heart warming film and the songs fit perfectly within it, especially 'make your own kind of music' And 'council estate-centric, middle class written drama' didnt work out too badly for Blood Brothers, they though are both very different.

True, but like a lot of purely British content, Blood Bros doesn't have much scope in the US, and it would be a shame to do a Mamas/Papas Jukebox that completely alienates the US market, given they were an American band.
