Not sure if it’s been announced or not, but looks like Dominic Cooke is directing Nicola Walker and Iwan Davies in The Corn Is Green in July.
Details about Kate Tempest’s Paradise should be announced in the next week or so too.

Why isn't anyone doing The Crucible? Of all the revivals they could be doing, this seems most pertinent to now (have a listen to Radio 4's 'The Purity Spiral' from Sunday), yet instead we get all the Arthur Millers but that, and constant Chekhovs and Ibsens.

Not, I hasten to add, that I mean to be rude to that wonderful venue which has rediscovered some gems over the years - but they do tend to be Orange Tree-sized gems. Cooke is a great director, though, so perhaps he'll make something gripping out of it. Is he going to be his generation's Howard Davies, able to turn his hand to anything - new writing, Shakespeare, modern classics, musicals - and come up with something fresh and powerful?! |

You might have thought it would be a play they’d do a radical adaptation of to make it more “relevant” in some way, but the casting seems to imply it will be played as written. I think it’s a play, like A Taste Of Honey, the NT should do, whether it is a museum piece remains to be seen. |

They do have one major 'name' commission underway, which I know will excite some members here (ooer misus). I don't think writing is complete yet so probably a year or two off announcement, but who knows?

The Crucible was done six years ago by the Old Vic. The Chekhovs and Ibsens are all out of copyright so can be done often. |

Ah The Crucible. Yes what a play. I suppose some poor soul is worriting away in a Garret trying to make it contemporary and relevant. 😂

The Crucible also needs a big cast. Particularly if you want lots of girls to be possessed.
Can be expensive. Even for the National

Ah The Crucible. Yes what a play. I suppose some poor soul is worriting away in a Garret trying to make it contemporary and relevant. 😂 I’ve always thought it would work well with John Proctor as an American president, Elizabeth as First Lady, Abigail as an aide that he sleeps with, all the girls people from his past who accuse him, Judge Danforth and others as the Senate, all the older characters friends and aides of John’s (or his fathers) and the reverends representing the Christian masses etc. I may have to copyright that!!! I would watch it  |

It is a commentary on the McCarthy era - and it works because of the distance between the original narrative and the events on which it is commenting.
Updating it rips that connection apart.
By all means commission a new play that draws a connection between contemporary politics and the events of the anti-Communist witch hunts - but The Crucible only works because of what it is.

I am excited by the prospect of Romeo & Juliet with Josh O'Connor and Jessie Buckley. I think they'd have great chemistry and with Simon Godwin at the helm, this might be the first production of R&J which I will actually enjoy. Its done to death I know but I'm sad that I'm still yet to see the text be what it could be. Arthur Miller is another option but I would like to see the National do another musical. I can picture Pacific Overtures in the Olivier  |

I am always amused when people say we don’t need another production of a good play. I still remember the thrill of watching The Crucible at The Old Vic a few years ago and had never seen it and did not know the plot. It was brilliant. There are always people who are new to theatre.....and a good play is always a good play. Just because you have seen it doesn’t mean everyone has!!!!

I still remember the thrill of watching The Crucible at The Old Vic a few years ago and had never seen it and did not know the plot. It was brilliant. There are always people who are new to theatre.....and a good play is always a good play. Just because you have seen it doesn’t mean everyone has!!!! Nope, sorry, for some of us it’s a bum-numbingly boring play. I only hung around at the Old Vic production for the interval ice-cream, but that turned out to be awful too. The ice cream has improved since. I’m not sure I’ll ever say the same about the play! |

The Crucible has been performed in London twice in the last couple of years, a touring production at Richmond and last year at The Yard, not a reason not to do it but a play that is regularly revived only not in the ‘major’ Theatres.

I'll never like "The Crucible," since WWET (World's Worst English Teacher) wrecked it for me. Anyway, I don't think it is even close to his best plays. Ive always rated it is best. |
