The Understudy is often quite busy, but then anywhere will be busy, because it's a Saturday in central London. It's actually much better in summer, because they have lots of seating outside then - maaaaaybe at the end of March we'll be lucky.
As for prices at the Understudy, it's pretty standard London pub prices. I don't remember being struck one way or the other on the occasions I've been in there.

Oh, I thought it was going to be between the matinee and the evening performances, but whatever works for people and if some want to stay longer, or return, so much the better! I almost certainly wouldn't make it until between the two theatre times as before my matinee I will be going to whatever film I most want to see on the day, and it's usually quite a rush to get from the cinema to the first theatre.
When I get time I will nip in to check out this Understudy place - for those who know, is it that newish, separate building which looks like a little conservatory, to the south of the main NT complex, please?

showgirl , nope Understudy is right in the NT itself, in its front left corner Thank you, Stasia - despite hailing from so far away, you evidently know the NT (or your bars!) better than I do. I realise now that it must be the place I hurtle past on those occasions when I have to go to the ghastly Dorfman rather than one of the main house spaces.

Am at National today so just checked, opens at 12 and does indeed have coffee making stuff for those who don't want a drink. Also randomly claims to have board games.....

Not random! Very popular in bars/pubs. Although they should really just have people play charades or similar where they have to act out plays/musicals.

I'm going to a board game cafe in a few weeks. There's one in Oxford too.

Will we have a 'Theatre Board' sign or something on the table? ....visions of me walking in, staring round blankly, wondering which group of people are us lot! Or are we all gonna be wearing our badges?

I emphatically don't do badges. However, as I wouldn't be getting there until after the matinee (so well after 5.30 pm), you'll probably either all have gone or be under a table...

If you haven't got a badge (Madge!) click here for a freebie (apart from the P&P). If you want a supersize badge for your tote bag, handbag, manbag, or any other bag you happen to drag about then click on Shop on the main menu.

Why don't we follow Parsley's example and wear sparkling clothes? Those of us who can't afford this could bring an item of cutlery and twirl it near to a light-source. This should help identify everyone.

I want to come But people may stab me Perhaps with the suggested cutlery I have met one board member many times at the theatre though At least 5/6 times purely by chance And we got on very well Very polite and nice he is too

I was in the Understudy earlier tonight at about five o'clock, some music, nothing too loud (Radiohead) and it wasn't too packed, but I don't know if anyone wants to volunteer to get in early(ish) and nab a settee? It's open until 1 a.m. on a Saturday, for those that want to show their dedication to the cause.

Do they have an emergency wheelchair and pair of ear defenders for the frailer forum member?
