I was planning to See Phantom of the Opera when I go to Paris in January but obviously cannot. I have looked for alternatives and this appeals but my French isn't great. Is it a good show if you don't have a clue what is going on? If not any suggestions?

I haven't seen this one yet (Catching the tour in Brussels in spring) but generally you shouldn't expect the big French spectacles to make an awful lot of sense, they're more concert-like with amazing sets, choreographies and pop tunes. Could of course read the Dumas novel before seeing the show or watch one of the countless movie versions (the Disney version is still my favorite).
When exactly are you going? Notre Dame de Paris finishes its run on 8th January so if you can still catch it, I'd recommend it. It started the French musical boom 18 years ago and it's full of fantastic tunes.
If you arrive later than 8th, look into "Le Rouge et le Noir" at Le Palace, it has extended to 29th January due to huge demand. It's in a rather small (lovely) theatre, but again, great catchy tunes and a fantastic cast. I wouldn't even say, you need to read the original novel by Stendhal (it's endless and quite a slog, though I forced myself through it ahead of seeing the show). Try and see if you can get hold of the mini series with Ewan McGregor (!) or failing that, read a synopsis, there isn't all that much to the story. I can't say I'd recommend this above the Mousquetaires since I haven't seen that one yet, but I'd definitely recommend seeing it.
