I know there has been a little bit of discussion about this film on the HAMILTON thread, but thought that it deserved its own thread.
I'm just back from a screening, and absolutely ADORED it! I went purely due to Lin Manuel Miranda's involvement, and the songs are FANTASTIC! They develop plot and character in a way I have not seen in a Disney film before, whilst being very catchy and instantly memorable. Some were spine-tingling, and "How Far I'll Go" is a great "I Want" song, and so much better than "Let It Go". The best score I have heard from a Disney film by far!
The story is good, and clear throughout. There are several moments that pack such an emotional punch, so much so that I found myself with tears in my eyes several times. At one point, I was out-and-out sobbing! The film also looks visually stunning.
Just go - you won't regret it! I might see it again for a second time.

I absolutely adored it. After being thoroughly disappointed by Frozen, I thought this was the best Disney animated musical I've seen since the 90s. Lin wrote a great and varied soundtrack without a single dud. Not only that but his songs worked as songs in a musical should, they furthered the story along, which doesn't always happen in Disney films.
Agreed on the emotions, I teared up several times. It's a simple story but is told in the most beautiful way. It was visually stunning also. I will rewatch this again and again in the future.

Walt Disney Animation Studios have been on a roll first with Zootropolis and now Moana. I haven't seen Moana but I love the soundtrack, my favourite songs are We Know the Way and You're Welcome although Shiny is a close third.
I really appreciate WDAS doing well because they did lose their way around the early to mid 2000s when Pixar and DreamWorks dominated and now they're creating hit after hit. Whereas Ilumination, Warner Animation Group etc sacrifice the story in favour of gags, Disney and Pixar films have the right balance of humour, story and emotion to create an overall better film.

I saw Moana this afternoon, and loved it. Disney have had a good run of films since Tangled, with not a duff one anywhere and quite a diverse mixture of genres as well. Musically this is certainly a step above Frozen: whereas The Princess and The Frog, Tangled and Moana are quite definitely musicals, Frozen always felt to me as though it was designed more to sound like a musical than to be a musical. (Not long after Frozen's run I said that Frozen sounded the way someone would expect a musical to sound if they'd seen ten musicals and thought that was a lot, while Tangled sounded the way someone would expect a musical to sound if they'd seen a hundred musicals and thought that wasn't many.)
There have, inevitably, been some complaints about how Disney has altered the real culture to fit the requirements of the film, but I think the company deserves credit for doing as much as they reasonably can to bring that culture to the screen in the first place, considering that it would have been far cheaper to skimp on the research and 99% of the audience would have neither known nor cared. They've done a good job here, making the mythology feel entirely natural.
There were a couple of trailers. Pixar are doing another Cars movie, as that dead horse clearly hasn't been flogged enough. And Illumination are soon to release Sing, which looks OK but for some reason Illumination keep promoting themselves with Minions as if they believe that won't cause traumatic flashbacks. Why do you do this to us, Illumination?

I think Sing looks okay but I hope it's better than The Secret Life of Pets, that film was such a disappointment.

LOVED Moana! Utterly gorgeous film. Didn't know The Rock could sing. Worth sitting through the credits for the post-credit sting.

"Moana" - Good title for a show about many of the posters on this forum. So, sorry to hear it's rather good,

Finally seen it here in New York this morning (it's not released in Germany until the 22nd - and I'd have to find an English screening anyway) and hugely enjoyed Moana. LMM did a great job, I really loved the songs and will also buy the soundtrack. The animations looked great and were really impressive - lots of wow moments.
I found the chicken rather annoying (I'd have preferred the pig), and the audience was beyond horrible - lots of badly behaving kinds and infants. As much as I'd love to see it again, I'm waiting for the Blu Ray to be released.

So I finally caught a screening of this on the weekend. This was extremely good. Very visual and colourful. Now I'm a little biased as I'm a massive Disney fan but this was really quite complex and detailed.
As there is a trend now for Disney to adapt all new projects for the stage, given that the best part of 3/4s of this was set on the water (possibly I'm lacking vision here but) I do wonder how they will stage this when they come round to it.
What really stood out for me was the determination if this little girl and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson was vocally great- speaking and singing-and it was evident the amount of thought and detail has been put into this film. Songs were great too!
Was it as good as Frozen? For me no, but that's just my opinion and they're two entirely different projects.
Whilst I appreciate it was the comedy element, that chicken was just stupid.
Disney have done it again. Another one for my collection when it's released.

I saw Moana again today. I bought "The Art of Moana" last week and it adds considerably to the film to know the thinking behind the designs. Until I read the book I hadn't realised that the film is set 2000 years ago at a time when the voyaging really had stopped for centuries, although I doubt the reality behind the story involved a giant singing crab.

I enjoyed it but didn't love it. I liked the songs, and I thought the animation was absolutely BEAUTIFUL, but I thought the story was too much of a 'Pocahontas/Hercules' mash-up with a touch of 'Lava' thrown in, and so it didn't feel that original to me. It made me laugh in numerous places, but at no point did I feel anywhere near crying.
'Tangled' still wins for me ;-)
I really liked the short before the film started!

Something I meant to mention yesterday but forgot:
The "tweeting" joke needs to go. I don't know what they were thinking. It's the weakest line in the film; possibly the weakest line in any film. It's clunky and out of place for the setting and will make what should be a timeless classic feel jarringly dated in a decade or so when Twitter has been replaced by the latest Internet fad. If Disney have any respect for the film they'll rerecord and reanimate that couple of seconds and insert a cactus into whoever it was who came up with the line in the first place.

Look, if lame jokes referring to a specifically current thing that will mean nothing to future generations and weren't that funny to begin with should be roundly excised from artistic works, then we're looking at reducing the entire Shakespeare canon by at least 25% right here.

I just saw it today, and I loved it. I thought it was very original. Also love How Far I Will Go. I am astonished (but not surprised) at how a more nuanced, original and special work was relatively overlooked compared to the overrated Frozen.
This is also good:

Saw this today on DVD. The animation was just stunning. The best i've seen so far. The songs were good, but not standouts for me - its taken a few listens for me to really like 'How Far I'll Go'
The girl voicing Moana was fantastic, though i thought Dwayne Johnson was just ok. He doesnt really have much range in his speaking voice.
And I loved the chicken. he made me laugh out loud numerous times, he was ALMOST as good as the horse in Tangled.

Just watched my blu ray copy that arrived this morning. Visually its stunning, beautiful. The Rock i really liked also thr girl who played Moana. The story wasnt the strongest but the scene where Moana leaves the island (wont spoil it) brought a tear to my eye, simple and beautiful.
The songs though, ugh after all the hype i was surprised how forgettable and bland they were. I think it would have almost been better without songs. And 'Shiny' reminded me of the songs from the Disney wannabe movies from the 90s

My 3D Blu-ray arrived this morning. I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.
I get the impression that Moana has had a shorter run than the other recent Disney musicals. With both Tangled and Frozen my Blu-ray arrived before the cinema run had completely finished so I was able to watch the film in the cinema after seeing it on BD. With Moana the film had almost completely disappeared a month ago.
