Submitting nominations are now open for the WOS Awards 2017. Shortlist announced on 1st December. Love how the public are the ones who decide everything about these awards!
Any productions/performers bound to get recognised??

As I'm sure many posters will be quick to say, and we'll probably have lengthy discussions later on in this thread, but of course the flip side to having the public vote, is that, as is always the way with the WoS Awards, nominations are most commonly performers and shows with the biggest fan-bases.
So expect all your favourite celebs to be nominated, whether they're talented or not!

Yeah I'm not sure about this either, as so many talented performers and great shows get ignored. Meanwhile we get to watch Wicked, Phantom and Les Mis battle it out for 'Best West End Show' for the millionth year in a row. Fun.
Still, I'll probably put my votes in at some point...

Already submitted my nominations. Under this particular circumstance, I'm classing The Threepenny Opera as a play, so I can nominate Groundhog Day for the musicals category. They were the only two things I've seen in London this year (and Curious Incident which I listed as Beat WE Show).

Yeah I can definitely see where people are coming from there. I've voted but I haven't done it on popularity, I've done I think on who was worthy of each category.

That's the problem with awards like these though, people are going to nominate and vote for what they've seen, and as the vast majority of people won't have seen everything, it really is nothing more than a popularity contest, doubled down because first the shows have to have been popular enough for people to see, then the popular choices in and among those popular shows will have that extra boost. Pointless really.

Who have people nominated for services to theatre? Which is still voting based on popularity.... because have you seen every show and performance in order to make an informed unbiased decision? People will vote based on what the have seen, and what they have seen will be things they were interested to see, and what they were interested to see would be based on things that made that show a popular choice for them in the first place... and so on and so on... I do not vote in these things as i haven't seen everything to be able to make a justified decision. |

I'm guessing Oliver Cheshire is on the voting panel somewhere! Otherwise, a fairly dull set of nominations and, of course, Boring Potter is going to win loads. What a shocker! Yawn. Having said that, Pixie Lott getting a nomination just goes to show how seriously we should take these particular set of awards anyway. If I couldn't see christmas decorations I'd swear I'd be checking the calendar to see whether it was April or not.  |

Yeah, not too many surprises were there? I've voted, but only in categories where I've seen most if not all of the nominees. It's a fun and glam event in Feb, but the results are hardly surprising. I was torn on Best supporting actress in a musical (went for Rebecca Trehearn in the end though  ) while my Best New Musical vote went to Groundhog Day (which looks like it could end up being the underdog in the category) without a second thought. |

Much as I really like Carrie, clearly she is a filler for Gina, and she got in purely on fan base, even though i'm sure she was great in Chitty. When the Oliviers come round, it will be the same 4 plus Gina no doubt! |

I mean I can complain about these awards all I want, but I'm still gonna vote ain't I.
For interest to probably no one but me (to look back on!), here's how I voted. Not seen as many nominees as I thought/would've liked, but quite a few are either productions that I had no interest in seeing or productions, some regional theatre, and some productions that are really quite recent that I haven't had the time to see yet. Out of all the nominated shows I haven't seen, only have tickets for Harry Potter so far! So, I whittled the categories down to who I'd seen, and voted from that (apart from one). If I'd seen none, I didn't vote.
Best Actor Play: Only seen 2, NOT voting for Kenny B's Archie Rice, had to be Ian McKellen.
Best Actress Play: Seen none, didn't vote.
Best Actor Musical: Seen 2, (Michael Xavier/Andy Karl), Andy Karl without a doubt.
Best Actress Musical: Again, only seen 2, (Glenn Close/Sheridan Smith), for my money, it's Sheridan Smith.
Best Supporting Actor in a Play: Seen none, didn't vote
Best Supporting Actress in a Play: Seen none, didn't vote
Best Supporting Actor in a Musical: Seen 2, (Tyrone Huntley/Joel Montague), for sheer outstanding-ness (that's a thing now), Tyrone Huntley.
Best Supporting Actress in a Musical: Only seen 1 (Rebecca Trehearn), so voted for her!
Best New Play: Only seen Bank Robbery, so voted for it - would've done so anyway, I reckon!
Best New Musical: Only seen 2 (School of Rock/Groundhog Day), but I'll be damned if anything would beat Groundhog Day for me.
Best Play Revival: Only seen No Man's Land, so voted for it!
Best Musical Revival: Happily saw 4 out of 5 here (not Ragtime), and I actually didn't have many reservations in voting for JCS.
Best Direction: Seen 2 (Groundhog Day/Funny Girl), again Groundhog Day wins here.
Best Choreography: Again, 2 on the list I'd seen (Groundhog Day/JCS), voted for Groundhog Day.
Best Costume Design: This is the only time I'm breaking my rule, as I've only seen Funny Girl, but wanted to give it to Half A Sixpence.
Best Set Design: Only seen 2 (Show Boat/Groundhog Day), went for Groundhog Day.
Best Lighting Design: Only seen Groundhog Day on that list, so voted for it!
Best Video Design: Again, only saw Groundhog Day so voted for that. Though I suspect that's Lazarus' for the win!
Best Off-West End Production: Only saw Last 5 Years, so that was that.
Best Regional Production: Seen none, didn't vote.
Best West End Show: Seen 'em all, always vote Les Mis but I don't think I've actually seen it this year, so Kinky Boots!

Voted for Sheridan, Funny Girl and Dreamgirls mainly.

Slightly peeved Louise and Laura didn't nab nominations for Side Show though.

Just catching up on nomination announcements.. Is anyone else slightly confused by Dreamgirls nominations? I mean it only had 5 shows of previews before the nominations ended. There are a few suspect nominations in there for sure. I guess I can believe one tweet from Amber Riley could get enough votes in 4 days, even she tweeted she was surprised they were eligible. But Casey? Adam Bernard? Smells fishy! Sonia Friedman strikes again... must have some huge e-mail databases. For me it just shows up a flawed system for WhatsOnStage. Having said that I have heard that they are deserving I just can't see how they physically got the figures in 5 shows even if every audience member voted.
I voted mostly for Groundhog Day so I'm happy anyway!
