Do any of you good people have experience of using the American Express cardholder priority at the the National? I assume it doesn't make tickets available to the same degree as joining its "mailing list", which now seems very expensive. Many thanks.

Yes, there's some discussion of it in the thread on memberships - theatreboard.co.uk/thread/747/national-theatre-membershipsThere's a reserved allocation of seats available after member booking opens but before public booking opens. In some cases the reserved seats stay exclusive to Amex cardholders after public booking opens. Generally the higher priced seats but I've also been able to get £15 seats during amex booking. Didn't used to include the Dorfman but it now does Definitely worth a go as a free alternative to membership!

Does that mean that seats in the reserved allocation for card holders are usually better seats (if top price) or do they still keep a good allocation for public booking?

Better still...
The email I got from Amex today says that if you buy tickets during the Amex prebook period, you get a free programme (one per ticket)...

A happy addition to my ugly lies beneath the bone ticket. The Amex decision over membership is proving to be a wise one so far.

A money saving related top tip for Amex cardholders. If you manage your account online, there should be a tab for "Offers tailored to you" - will be a list of offers you can save to your card, typically "spend £x in this retailer, get a statement credit of £y". You have to save the offer to your card - the credit then turns up automatically when you do a qualifying spend. For instance at the moment I've got £10 back if I spend £50 in House of Fraser, £5 if I spend £45 in Argos. There's also a great annual offer called "Shop Small" which is to promote small independent businesses - from today till 18th Dec you get £5 back if you spend £10 in a participating business, once per business. Again you need to save this to your card. Details here - www.amexshopsmall.co.uk/shop-small-for-shoppers/You can use the map there to find particpating businesses, but in previous years I've just used independent shops / restaurants / bars that take Amex and got a few £5 credits as a nice surprise . A particular nice surprise last year was to get a £5 credit when I spent £10 on stamps in a post office This offer looks like it works for a few theatres - one year the Old Vic took part but doesn't seem to now. But it does look like the Young Vic and Almeida, for instance, are participating. Note - Shop Small only works for in-person transactions, not online.
