I don't even know why, but Ruthie Henhsall - I just completely lost it. I didn't make any sense, my voice wasn't working. I said something really stupid. I've met people I liked much more, but Ruthie Henshall just did me in. She was nice but I felt so embarrassed immediately after. Why Ruthie? What about her? I'll never know. I'll never try it again, oh no, not with Ruthie. Lin Manuel Miranda seems like he has it pretty rough generally at stage doors, if youtube videos are to be believed. He is amazing though, I'd probably throw myself at him too. I've had drinks completely randomly with her now ex-husband! He was playing 'Roger' in 'Rent' (must have been 2006 on Broadway) and after the show we decided to nip in the bar that was just near the theater (think it was called 'Thirty Two Bar'). We noticed some giggly types on a table ('Rentheads') and went to order our drinks, well it turns out a lot of the 'Rent' cast were in. It was quite limited for tables so we ended up on a table next to them and just got chatting and well then joined them for a few hours drinking! I forget his name but he was lovely, I remember him telling me that had meet via 'Peggy Sue got Married' show. It was funny because the table with the giggly girls just stared at us the whole time and then eventually left, it can be interesting seeing on the other side so to speak. Tim Howar. He's awesome!

Oh *Christ*. Wasn't there security to escort those perverts away? Sadly not as they weren't actually doing anything 'wrong' enough to warrant them being moved away/on. This is why the rule about not giving out child performer schedules existed on the show as. They had ways to try and get the schedule which is why it changed regularly. What's the thing with older man and their obsession with Billy's.. Quite scary.

Sadly I gather they've had similar problems at Matilda. Just awful.

A lot of devoted fans feel a sense of belonging. The right way to feel belonging is to feel that you belong to your tribe of fellow fans, with whom you can commune and discuss and worship together. The wrong way to feel belonging is to feel that the subject of your devotion, in some weird way, belongs to you. You'll see it at a lot of stage doors. But there's a HUGE power imbalance between, say, hordes of teenage girls clamouring desperately for Lin-Manuel Miranda's attention, or a gaggle of older ladies clambering over themselves to get to Michael Ball, compared with a batch of middle-aged men picking their favourite Matilda or Billy and showering them with attention. Grown adult performers, whose negative stage-door experiences I in no way wish to diminish, have developed better emotional capabilities to cope with this, whereas child performers are (one SINCERELY hopes) much more innocent, and also require a stronger degree of legal protection in the workplace. One hopes these men don't mean anything by their actions other than sincere admiration, but I don't think a soul on earth would be willing to trust in the existence of that sincerity where young performers are involved.
TL;DR - I don't think anyone knows for sure why these men do what they do, hopefully it's innocent fandom manifesting itself weirdly, but it does look super odd, better not risk it.

Not in UK but one time at Billy Elliot I've seen old women, like in their 40s/50s (old compared to the actors playing Billy! I don't want to offend anyone!) trying to hug the child actors to get a photo and talk to them like if they knew each others. And definitely they were not part of their family. I was at the stage door waiting for a friend of mine who was working as a stage manager and I was, let's just saying, quite concerned. As much as concerned as the parents of the kids. Then my friend told me that those women went to see the show almost every day in the last week (it was the opening week) and every time they were at the stage door like that, so they were in talk with the police to do something about that.

I think Baemax is right, for the most part-hopefully anyway- it's a weird fan response that's manifesting itself creepily. Doesn't make it good or 'right' but I'd always thought of the men and women of that ilk as just well, a very odd version of the 'standard' obessive fan. Of course the times we live in (particularly given the revelations of the last few years) this looks even worse than it is...and it's already pretty creepy looking.
Unrelated to that, it occured to me that the people who tweet Carrie Fletcher often seem to be the parents of kids who are her fans asking why she didn't come and see their little darlings. Which is actually even worse, as they should have a better sense of decent behaviour. And also I thought I'd mention it, as I feel bad for making any sweeping comments about 'young youtube fans' when in fact their parents often seem far worse!

The worst stage door experience I've had was when I saw the Miss Saigon revival in previews. There were fans wanting to get a picture with Tanya Manalang (the alternate Kim) and would put an arm around her and spin her round in the direction of whatever friend was taking her photo, poor girl! I've heard less than pleasant things about fans' behaviour with the Tams, which is even worse, those kids are only 4-6 years old.

As I said few posts ago I can kinda excuse the youngsters for a fanboy behaviour. But from someone who should be an educator for those kids? Meh.

A Carrie fan met her when out and about earlier and made a throwaway comment on Twitter about how Carrie looked scared when she met her and put a smiley face. Carrie has then got aboard her "outraged and ranting" bandwagon and has been reading this girl's tweets and responding to tweets where she didn't mention her in. A general indirect tweet not mentioning her name where the girl just said she was disappointed by the meeting. The poor girl must feel awful!
Edit: and so it continues... "Nothing weighs heavier on my heart than feeling I've disappointed someone"
(Ironically this is under a pinned tweet saying she won't be going to the stage door for the forceeable future!)

One might suggest she's chosen the wrong profession then.

I feel sorry for those girls (Hopefuls?), getting scolded by their hero (who isn't really much older than them) can't be nice.

One of the many reasons I find this thread baffling is that I have absolutely no idea who Carrie Hope Fletcher is I popped into the local library this week. They have a (new to me) stand called "Hot Picks", which are books that are in such high demand apparently that you can only borrow them for a week. Right at the front was a book by... Carrie Hope Fletcher (where does she find the time to do all this tweeting and write books?). Nobody was borrowing it. Not even for a week.

I presume that child performers are chaperoned as they arrive and leave, and not just when they're actually inside the theatre?
Or at least that the chaperone always exchanges responsibility with a known responsible adult?

I didn't really know of Carrie that well, but after reading about the argument she had with that girl on here, I decided to go and take a look for myself. She was despicable! The poor girl has had to make her Twitter account private. This kind of bullying should not be tolerated.

Or at least that the chaperone always exchanges responsibility with a known responsible adult? They are. But sometimes (not always) the producers encourage the chaperone to be patient with the fans. Of course there are limits. If you ask me the best politic about child actors is the one of the RSC. No autographs and no photos with the kids. Period.

Or at least that the chaperone always exchanges responsibility with a known responsible adult? I'm sure someone more knowledgable will confirm this but I'm pretty sure I've read it's a legal requirement that child actors are chaperoned to and from a theatre as well as in it. Certainly when I've stagedoored shows with child actors - Les Mis, The Sound Of Music, Showboat recently - if I've noticed child actors exiting afterwards they've always been in a group accompanied by their chaperone. And I have certainly never spoken to any of them, it seems inappropriate, quite apart from the fact I dislike children & never speak to any unless I have to.

At Oliver the chaperone used to rush them through stage door saying "no photos".

One of the many reasons I find this thread baffling is that I have absolutely no idea who Carrie Hope Fletcher is Don't worry. She'll be along soon enough with a video telling you that it's OK to not know who she is. (Dammit, I try not to be bitchy about her, but she doesn't make it easy. I'm starting to suspect she's someone's fictional creation.)

I tweeted once about "a certain actor" who didn't come out of stage door to the huge queue waiting at Les Mis. The only reference in the tweet to Ms H/F was referencing the show but yes she found it and replied to me over 5 tweets as to why!
I was drunk in Soho at the time so didn't particularly care but nice that she has time to search twitter for any vague references to her and then set her legions upon us common folk!
