Just thinking about what I would like on Strictly: 1. No stupid make-up on Halloween or any other time. 2. No show dances except when they are relevant and appropriate, like at the end of the series. 3. No elaborate sets or furniture. 4. No props except perhaps in show dances (see No.2) 5. Correct music with the proper rhythms so that the waltzes have three beats in each bar, tangos sound Latin and charlestons have the proper kind of syncopated beats. 6. Camera work that stays sensibly on the couples so that we can see their feet as well as the rest of them. The cameramen should be forced to watch all of Fred Astaire's dance routines on film. I guess this is what's called pie in the sky! If I could like your post a million times, I would. It's also called Strictly series 1 to 5 - the good old days! If you two don't already have Radio Times subscriptions, I think we all definitely know what to get you for Xmas!

I do agree with the above. What we will get I fear is all the Latin dances over and over again with reducing costumes for the first few weeks, then eventually a few ballroom numbers.

I'm terribly sorry to break the news that Peggy Spencer and the Penge Formation Ballroom Team are no longer with us. Things have moved on, but cheer up tonyloco! It's showbiz!

Anyway, back on topic, Gemma Atkinson is one of the breakfast presenters on Key 103, a commercial radio station in North West England. Cue VTs of her professional getting up in the middle of the night to accompany her to the station, and her two co-hosts 'surprising' her at the dance studio, mid-rehearsal. Hadn't realised that she was now on the Radio until they said on Breakfast this morning, I thought she was still in Emmerdale actually. I agree that her voice wouldn't seem a natural fit for Radio and she has never done any other presenting as far as I know. I've no idea if she has done any dancing before but she is a gym bunny and will no doubt be in some fairly revealing outfits given her figure. She will also need a fairly tall male partner as she is 5ft 9ins so in heels will be near 6ft.

I Just Want to Let You Know it's the vicar Communard! Good one! (See what I did there?) Well, I just got my new favourite for this year's Strictly! He's hilarious, intelligent, and comes across as a lovely man. He might be the terrible/amazing contestant that everyone loves/hates to watch (prediction - the new Ed Balls, and he outlasts an awful lot of the other contestants)! His samba and rumba will certainly be sights to behold!

It's often said that the Anglican Communion is on the verge of splitting in two, into the conservative and more liberal wings. I suspect this announcement could be the straw that breaks the camels back!

Mothers eh? Particularly harsh given Michaelmas is the end of September, and the first live performance show isn't until 23rd Sept! I'd bet a LOT of money on the fact that Richard won't be first out (I reserve the right to withdraw this statement, in the event that the next 10 people announced are all dirty, rotten ringahs!!!) But I'm sure there'll be some nondescript actor or TV personality, who fails to win over the audience, and/or plods around the floor looking like they hate the whole world!

Oh he will be hilarious, but I dread the thought of him attempting Latin...

Love the Reverend and Ruth. If the Brian Conley rumour turns out true, it'll be shaping up to be another cracking series!

Love the Reverend and Ruth. If the Brian Conley rumour turns out true, it'll be shaping up to be another cracking series! The Sun are reporting Conley as a done deal - and they're rarely wrong this late in the day. Some of their 'rumours' are very definitely wrong - Joan Collins ain't doing it, this year, next year or ever!! Others are a bit - Ross Kemp? Really?!!!

The Mirror had Conley as a done deal on the first day of reveals (see up-thread - they have him pictured in front of a glitterball - can't imagine they'd photoshop that would they?)
Joan Collins? Oh perleeeze no. Ghastly woman.
We still need sports people, politician and somebody's mother/father.

The thing that troubles me about Brian Conley (apart from my own personal bias) is that you should only enter a dance 'competition' in the expectation that you will win, however unlikely that may seem. Mr Conley cannot possibly have that expectation, cus he's in panto in Milton Keynes from early December. Either commit fully, or not at all.

Well I didn't know that about Brian Conley. However, I suppose it's really no worse than the soap actors who have to be on set from 7am till 9pm and then do all their rehearsing late at night is it? There have been several decent contestants who just couldn't manage it in the latter stages of the competition - especially after they start having to do 2 dances. (Wish they wouldn't do that.)

Surely there is a difference though - Conley is completely unavailable in December so if he's still in the competition by then (which could happen given the voting public's tendency to back the "comedy" contestant until far too late in the day), he'd have to withdraw or face breaching his panto contract. Soap stars are at least available every Saturday and if they have to rehearse late at night that's up to them, but at least they still do it.

Without being party to his panto contract, which I believe are usually multi-year, I assume there is an expectation, barring a very serious illness, that he will be on stage in MK on opening night, which happens to be a Saturday.
Incidentally, do we know that it looks like the season finale will be on 16 December, looking at Craig's panto schedule?

This is in answer to @posterj. TallPaul snuck in front of me. Do you think? Well I suppose we don't know what the panto contract is - he could be let off on Saturdays - but I agree that if someone goes into the show with other commitments for the latter stages that's a bit meh.

Oh perleeeze no. Ghastly woman. We still need sports people, politician and somebody's mother/father. I suspect the sportsperson will get announced some time towards the end of the World Championships - there are some strong rumours about Jonnie Peacock. Given the BBC is pretty beholden to onscreen diversity, he certainly fits into a particular group that hasn't been represented previously and fulfills the sportsperson quota. BTW, I'm wondering if having a vicar adequately replaces the need for a politician?! He's certainly a vast preference to Nigel Farage - who's name has been mentioned in the run-up to the show, but I choose not to even entertain the prospect! Too awful to think how he'd ruin my Saturday night TV!!

Incidentally, do we know that it looks like the season finale will be on 16 December, looking at Craig's panto schedule? Craig has specific contracts during his panto run, which mean he's not appearing in Saturday performances. I'm pretty sure Lesley Joseph also had a similar requirement for her to be exempted from performing if her run in Strictly clashed with her panto dates. IIRC, she was eliminated before it became an issue - and the producers (of both shows) may have calculated the chances of Conley making it to December are fairly slim. The non-contenders are usually gone by Blackpool or very shortly after (mid November), so most years, the risk pays off!

BTW, I'm wondering if having a vicar adequately replaces the need for a politician?! Nah! He'll always be first and foremost a communard. Sadly I fear there is still a politician place to fill, though Ed Balls ended up quite a surprise (in a good way) so I suppose you never know. Johnny Peacock would be very popular I think.

The difference between Craig and Brian is that with Craig there are no Saturday performances during SCD. The schedule jumps straight from Friday night to Sunday afternoon.

Joan Collins? Oh perleeeze no. Ghastly woman. She's fabulous. Rev Richard Cole on the other hand can kiss my astrakhan coat. Proof, as if we needed it, that once people have had a sniff of fame they can never really put it behind them and return to normal life. Another attention seeking desperado.
