I live in Brisbane Australia , I am planning to see Aladdin and My Fair Lady. But have had so many bad productions in Australia. I do not know if it worth the effort to go to Sydney. Or if I should just back to NYC went this year to NYC. And acting and singing is better way better. I fear Australians are awful. If I have to hear Lucy sing again I will throw up.
Even Jennifer Hudson was way better than any artist I saw in Australia except maybe Variety Hunt. And she was not even Tony nominated.
I just wish we stopped getting conservative awful shows here. Why can't we get Spring Awakening the Michael Mayer Version? Why could we not get Hedwig ? We never get really good shows here!! I would pay a lot to see Grey Gardens by Michael Grief. Or even the Jerry Michelle Directed Hairspray.

Hedwig played Sydney 10 years ago with iOTA in the lead. Grey Gardens played the Seymour Centre last December.
The non-mainstream musicals are out there, just not at the big theatres. We only really have 3 theatres in Sydney that take on the big musicals, so they have to go with the ones that will get the bums on seats to pay the bills. Sadly that means endless runs of Sound of Music & Les Miz.

Look on the bright side. The kangaroos are so much more plentiful in Australia than on Broadway. And you don't have Donald Trump.

I find most kangaroos lie about their musical theatre abilities. But don't forget the kangaroo teen buddies classic musical Pal Joey.

We're going to have to set up an account with Uber if the gags continue at this standard.

Doesn't Melbourne have a more lively musical theatre scene than Sydney? If you are talking main stream musicals, not really. It just depends on what show you want to see - you won't get more than 2 usually in each city at any time. Most of the big productions will tour the capitals, switching about after a few months. For example, Matilda is now playing in Melbourne but started last year in Sydney, Singing in the Rain just moved from Melbourne to Sydney, and Sound of Music just moved from Sydney to Adelaide. Occasionally you will have a show that doesn't tour. I know Once was only in Melbourne because they couldn't get the venues to tour it.

I live in Belgium and we hardly ever get a decent production here. And even if they do a decent show, they always put some well known TV actor in to sell more tickets. And of course those TV actors' singing sucks. But luckily I don't live too far from London so I can get there twice a year if I'm lucky.

I am from Sydney, Australia and now live in London.
Whilst I have a list of reasons as long as my arm for being here, my frustration over the Sydney Theatre scene is one of those reasons.

If I were a musicals fan I would tear my hair out living in Sydney ( well , anywhere in Australia actually). But luckily I am more a straight theatre girl, so while I don't have the choices I would in London nor NY, it's not too bad here. Prices though are terribly steep - and usually no price range ( ie. all seats tend to be the same price no matter where located)
