The NT is the worse where the "ushers" check the tickets at the main door, point or nod in a general direction and then you are "on your own" to find your seat once you are in the auditorium. Get there early to watch the fun ensue! When I went to see Kin earlier this year, there was a situation next to me where two couples had the same seats and one of them turned out to have tickets for The Witches and came into the wrong theatre… everyone very civilised on this occasion but how they got in still bewilders me

The Beatles? And during the songs in those days. And Frank Sinatra before that. My parents (who were in their 20s at the time of Frank's 'bobbysoxers') said it was the first time fans screamed like that.

I once totally forgot about a performance due to a family emergency and Newcastle Theatre Royal box office gave me a half price seat for another night - in a better spot than I'd had to begin with. It was Patrick Stewart in The Tempest so I'd have been gutted to miss it totally!

And don’t get me started on the Taylor Swift concert cheering, wooping and screeching after every song, this seems to be creaping in to all shows at the moment and really is OTT and does make me wonder why and where it has come from and why now! The Beatles? And during the songs in those days. When I first saw "A Hard Day's Night" in the 60s at the height of Beatlemania the audience were in a frenzy even before the film had started. When the curtains parted the excitement was at fever pitch and the screaming could have damaged eardrums. It turned out to be the Pearl and Dean ads!

I once went on the right day, right seat, right theatre and right shows, but the wrong performance. I thought my ticket was for the evening - turns out I had booked matinée for that day, and missed it! I was already confronting the person in 'my' seat when I realised. Top marks to the Empire Liverpool (ATG) - they let me in free of charge in a different seat. They could see I was genuinely flustered and embarrassed, and it was a genuine mistake. I've done that - both ways round! Turned up for the evening when my ticket was for the matinee, lovely Savoy Box Office staff sold me a ticket for the evening at day seat price. And getting as far as my seat for a Curve matinee (FOH didn't notice either) when my ticket was for the evening. Again, lovely Box Office staff switched my ticket to a spare house seat to save me killing hours before the evening show.

At the Orange Tree in Richmond the other day a man on the front row took his sandals off then stretched his legs out, bare feet on stage floor. I know it was a hot day, but… no. Don’t want to see anybody’s bare feet.

I haven’t read the whole thread so I’m not sure if this has been discussed already, but aren’t theatres kind of a major part of the problem when they sell noisy snacks like crisps and popcorn in paper bags? I know they need to make money but this does annoy me a lot every time I see shows in the UK…
In Finland, where I’m from, you aren’t usually allowed to take any drinks or snacks to the auditorium. If you buy something during the interval, you are supposed to consume it before going back to your seat. Our theatre buildings are usually bigger though, and there’s enough space for everyone in the lobby areas.

I remember when I started going to theatre in the 80s and 90s, a lot of places wouldn't let you take drinks into the auditorium... the interval drink was just that, you drank it in the interval and then went back to your seat. So it has changed in the UK in my lifetime, I assume just because the financial circumstances of venues have changed (or, more controversially, the theatre operators are trying harder to maximise their profits at the expense of customer experience)

Noisy snacks and theatre attitudes have definitely been discussed! I’m generally fine with drinks coming in, especially water. I was sat next to a cougher earlier in the week who I really wish had had water. The people who crunch their bottle or open cans during the show are a different issue.
I don’t think the theatres should sell alcohol during the show itself, as it encourages some people to get up and go to the bar. During the interval is obviously fine.
Noisy snacks are an issue. I was sat next to a woman and daughter yesterday who had purchased a tub of premium crisps during the interval, but of course decided to eat them during the show. Actually, the mother had tried to order on her phone during the first half but it didn’t go through. In this case, the mother did realise how noisy the daughter was after a few minutes and the crisps got put to one side. But theatres must be able to work out what it’s reasonable to serve and still make a profit. It’s hard to eat ice cream noisily. Just nothing crunchy or overly wrapped.

I wish theatre owners would use their f-ing brains and try and think of ways to make money that don't involve ruining the theatre experience with noisy snacks or drinks ordered while the auditorium is in motion. I see less shows now because I loathe the idea of eating/drink in the theatre full stop. There was a time when it wasn't allowed and I applaud theatres who still have rules about it. They should incentivise ordering drinks for either before the show or the interval rather than letting the eating/drinking experience get in way of those who care more about enjoying the show than tucking into a packet of crisps.

My view on food and drink depends on the show and also what it being consumed. A play that requires no distraction is one thing but a panto or a musical like Starlight Express? I admit I was happily eating a few sweets during the nosier sections of Starlight Express

Fortunately venues such as ROH , ENO, some concert halls don’t allow this. Interval Drinking at ROH is not a problem on the occasions when there is more interval time than performance time !

Agreed The smell from wine in a small auditorium can be quite overpowering.

I admit I was happily eating a few sweets during the nosier sections of Starlight Express Even loud shows often have quieter moments. The family behind me when I saw Starlight Express started eating popcorn every time there was a quiet moment and the children were bored. And those paper bags make a lot of noise.

At solo shows I always welcome the announcement that at the request of the performer the bar is closed during the show.

........ It’s hard to eat ice cream noisily........ Except when they spend several minutes scraping every last morsel out of the tub.

These sound effects bounce around beautifully in the Sam Wanamaker. They are intensely irritating in any theatre.

"Everything other than water should be consumed in the interval" doesn't mean "Water shouldn't be consumed in the interval."

Unbelievable display of arrogance at Two Strangers this evening where a woman decided to answer her phone in the second half and tap out a message for several minutes, along with the guy next to her who was also on his phone. Both in their early sixties. Even a tap on the hand from me and a "put it away" failed to deter her along with the hushed comments of those around her. Punctured the mood of an otherwise wonderful show. Then at the end she gave the obligatory standing ovation and filmed the bows of the two actors. Complete muppets.

In the end it made me laugh but I went to see The Book of Mormon for the third time last week, and the couple behind me guffawing and loudly saying ‘they can’t say that!’ after each gag was quite something 😂

Saw Pericles at the RSC last night. There was a man on the front row who was trying to subtly film the start of the second half but his flash kept turning on. Found the whole ordeal quite funny as he wrestled with his phone to turn the flash off. It kept turning on and off for about five mins then he gave up and put it face down on the floor.
