Manchester prices (midweek) £170 VIP £150 £125 £87.50 mid stalls £75 £65 £45 back row Then there’s a handful at £45 at the back corner of the circle. Grand Tier is £45, £25 and £13 Add a tenner for weekends. No concessions Theatrecard or otherwise. Zilch. Nada. Don't think I've ever seen Palace prices that high! There seems to be a small block of £13 tickets at the back of the stalls (restricted view) so I've got one of those just so I can see what the fuss is about Hamilton at The Palace will not get a penny off me until they are at least trying to solve the rowdy audience issues. At present, they are doing nothing.

It’s happening in theatres up and down the land. Seems unfair to judge them unfairly because someone happened to catch it on their phone.

I realise that it’s probably not the thread to discuss this, but nothing has really changed at the Palace. On Saturday, still cases of drunkenness, assaulting of staff. Customers basically refusing to leave the bar queue despite the 5, 2 minute calls. Result, huge queue in the aisle of Grand Tier even though the show had started.

The fact that people will queue for the bar rather than watch the actual show they paid for says a lot about British drinking culture.

I looked at Hamilton in Manchester. Half the mid-stalls premium seats left come with a package of three glasses of champagne and the other half come with a wine-tasting and a cheeseboard. Last time I was at the Opera House I saw that the programme stand in the stalls is now an Aviation Gin stand.
It’s pretty obvious whose venues are the worst for bad behaviour and what one of the main contributing factors is. The ease of videoing and posting incidents online means they’ll have to do something about it before too long even if it’s only through being publicly shamed into action.

I’ll never understand drinking (lots) at a show / concert. If I pay decent money to watch performers onstage, I want to be as sober as possible to engage fully and understand something.. surely ?😭 British culture at its finest I guess

I love having a drink as much as the next person but not when I'm at sporting or cultural event.

It's easy to point the finger at ATG but you can't blame them for people who can't handle their drink.

It's easy to point the finger at ATG but you can't blame them for people who can't handle their drink. But surely they’re the ones to blame for continuing to serve them?! It's going to take a change in both drinking culture and laws to make things change. In certain US states, it's illegal to serve alcohol to someone who is already visibly/physically impaired from drink/drugs, plus the laws have been changed that not only the venue but individual servers and bartenders can be found legally liable if said patron gets into a crash and causes injury or death. There are not only misdemeanor civil fines with the possibility of prison time for repeat offenders (the servers), but relatives of victims can sue the venue AND individual servers for damages.
When I've been in town for shows, I'm never impressed by the numbers of well dressed people I see who can barely stand up unassisted in Soho or Kensington where I normally stay. I don't understand drinking to that degree, but even in my 20s, I never drank so much that I could barely walk. I doubt ATG will go for it, but perhaps there needs to be a drink limit. Say two tops, and poor front of house staff will have to keep an eye on those trying to skirt the limit. Of course that does nothing to stop the people who enter the venue drunk already, but they have to start somewhere.

Agreed, all very valid points, and dealing with the pre-drinkers will be very difficult I know.
My understanding is the same law applies here (re. not serving anyone who’s already had more than enough) but of course when bars (not just theatre bars) need to maximise takings, I struggle to believe they and their staff follow it as strictly as they should (sadly).

The law is all very well and good but if you're a young, low wage FOH worker, are you really going to be the one who tells a drunk and rowdy customer they can't have another drink in the current climate?

This. Where I work, we’re constantly being told the importance of not serving people who are already intoxicated and the ramifications of doing so. Unfortunately, some FOH don’t want the bother and/or risk of denying a rowdy individual of their next drink

At Oklahoma! last week (Wyndham's) a group of 8 towards the back of the stalls (auditorium right) giggling and snorting their way through the dream ballet...until I turned round and shushed them.
The dream ballet sequence wasn't my thing either, but laughing and guffawing at it is not on.

(Although their programmes/merchandise stall is in a really silly place to be able to go before the show. People coming in through the right-hand doors run slap bang into the queue for it, and good luck if you're sitting on the right hand side of the stalls and need to get to the stairs.)

Not sure whether the worst behaviour will be on stage or in the audience.

Not sure whether the worst behaviour will be on stage or in the audience. The audience on Loose Women are quite respectful but a TV studio is more restrictive than a theatre.

I dread to think what this is going to attract. That was precisely my first thought when I saw it announced at lunchtime! I can guarantee sales of white wine and gin will beat the box office take hands down.
