Middle-aged male Doctor Who fans in fedoras with neckbeards giving toy daleks and the like to Peter Davison at Spamalot. Must be a very common thing for people who work/worked in popular science fiction franchises. They usually smelled bad, too. Patrick Stewart is very adamant when he does theatre that he will not sign Star Trek or X-Men merchandise. Not sure if it's the case for Ian McKellen.

Thinking back to Wicked, Rachel Tucker and that microwave… I don't know if it's still a thing at Wicked or elsewhere but people always used to turn up with baked cakes etc they'd made. I was at Stage Door once and Emma Hatton said to a teenage girl that she still had her Tupperware!

Can you just sign this and this and this. Big folders of photos and other things. They were at Anything Goes when I was there this week.

Thinking back to Wicked, Rachel Tucker and that microwave… Rather controversially the microwave story was debunked (or denied) by Rachel herself last year. A fan had asked her about it and she said it was just a bizarre rumour.

Having had my own Wicked crazy phase circa 2018-2019 as a 14/15 year old. (but obviously nowhere near this madness) I look back and chuckle. And now there's a whole new generation of fans. Circle of life etc etc

I've recently been rather alarmed by a fully grown adult who says this sort of thing quite regularly, only it's plays so lines rather than songs. They are convinced that they have had 'moments' with a particular actor that have not ever happened to any of the other hundreds of people present in the audience and now seem to live to 'accidently' bump into them whenever possible going to the lengths of watching their place of work to establish what time they leave and the route they take home. I've been pretty clear on my view of this which unsurprisingly has not gone down well but they continued to be supported in their interpretation by other's who encourage them in their behaviour.

Lots of Sci-Fi stars will only sign programmes/tickets or certainly not photos related to their films/series in this genre. They can then do these for charity or make a killing at the comic cons. The late Dame Diana Rigg wouldn't sign Avengers stuff for well over 25 years before her passing unless on very special occasions by which time collectors had stopped asking her to do so.
Iam McDiarmid I've seen in a number of plays and got assorted stuff signed and I just asked "I don't suppose you do Star Wars stuff?" as I had an old annual it would have been nice to get him on and he replied "No sorry I'd be signing my life away if I did". He has done some Comic Cons since and done them but he keeps his value up and controls when he signs them.
Disappointed that the microwave story is an urban myth as far as presents go for a dressing room it would be a lovely thing to have which the company could share and not creepy or risky.

I went to see Dance of Death at the Arcola and both Lindsay Duncan and her husband signed loads of sci-fi/telly stuff afterwards. I had no idea they’d even done the kind of work that draws autograph hunters!

Fans would get someone to sign a Dr Who, Avengers, Saint DVD if they were in an episode on it and a huge amount of character actors had guest slots on such shows.
Those type of collectors are real dedicated collectors rather than dealers who want big names on the popular Sci Fi stuff. Often an actor is surprised to be reminded they were in some of the shows for example Lindsay who has had a long and successful career.

This is probably going to open a can of worms and I know it's not particularly bad behaviour as such...but when did dress standards drop so low. Last night at the Chess concert was very noticeable. There we were in a gorgeous theatre and some people had made the effort to dress appropriately and then there were others who looked like they'd literally walked in after a day at the beach in old t-shirts,shorts and flip-flops. I know it's warm but you can still wear shorts and look respectable. Sorry. Rant over.

Flip flops anywhere other than on a beach disgust me. I do not want to see peoples nasty, rank feet.

The theatre doesn't have a dress code. Anyone should be welcome regardless of whether they have the means to don evening wear or not. It's not 'bad behaviour' of any kind to go to a theatre in a t-shirt and shorts in the middle of summer. If they're sitting down and shutting up and not disturbing anyone else, there's no need to judge people.

I don't really care what people wear to the theatre. I've seen people in shorts and t-shirts sitting and enjoying a show, no problems, respectful to those around them.
I've seen people fully dressed up for a night out in their best get thrown out for rowdy, drunken behaviour.
Wear what you want, just behave properly when you're sharing a room with 1,000 people.

Often try and take my reluctant friends to the theatre and had one instance recently where one of them was almost too nervous to go into the theatre after realising not many other people had shorts on, on a boiling hot day. Told him no one cares what you're wearing as long as you don't disturb people. It's a shame that was a lie rather than the actual truth.

Last night at Half a Sixpence at Kilworth, the mainly older audience were nearly all well dressed - but the group in the row behind me clearly had no idea they are not supposed to chat and comment on every scene and song, throughout the performance. It would be good if the pre-show reminder not to film or take photos included a request not to chat while the show is in progress. Great show by the way!

Backpacks! I was at the Chess matinee and could not believe the size of the backpacks some people brought in with them. I mean, what can you possibly need for an afternoon at the theatre that you can't put into something smaller? A couple of people clambered across those who were already seated, then swung around, backpack still in place, nearly taking out any unfortunate theatregoer within range.

There were a load in the evening performance too! Several guys had them on during the interval, which wasn't great in the limited room in the toilets!

A surprising amount of audience members bring actual full-size suitcases with them. Just check into your hotels people! It's not up to theatres to store two weeks worth of luggage for you in whatever tiny cloakroom space they have!

I find a lot of people come straight from work and can’t leave their work laptop unattended anywhere for fear of the consequences if it’s lost or stolen, so have no option but to bring to the theatre/into the auditorium with them.
However, it’s basic etiquette to take it off and carry it before you squeeze along the row to your seat, and I completely agree there’s no place for suitcases at the theatre… there’s plenty of luggage store places at the major rail stations etc.

The old backpack issue has been going on for years especially on the tube. Been nearly knocked over many times before. With lockdown and Covid I think we have just forgotten about the blight of them.
