Brighton Odeon has closed suddenly due to "issues with the building". The entire Kingswest complex has been closed as of Saturday 19th October.
This was a hugely controversial building when constructed - a massive seafront complex with virtually no windows over the beach and sea. Although not part of the original scheme, Rank closed the Odeon (West Street), Academy, and Regent cinemas to open 3 screens in a former conference hall space, and skating rink at Kingswest. Now subdivided and extend to form an 8 screen multiplex.

I saw a movie in screen 2 a couple of years ago. It was a grim and outdated cinema internally, and externally I thought the building ugly and not befitting its seafront location.
The best thing would be for complete demolition and rebuilding to an attractive design.

I’ve only been in there once a couple of years ago and the place seemed very grim then, out of date posters on the walls and a few shall we say uncouth types loitering round the coffee place next to it, I’m presuming the whole complex of the cinema , coffee shop and club will be demolished and some new built in their place; it’s a prime location but always just seems unappealing.
