An icon in countless films as far back as I can remember including too many films apart from Star Wars and The Lion King to rattle off easily (I saw the filmed version of Driving Miss Daisy he did with Angela Lansbury at the BFI with her in attendance): R.I.P. to an absolute legend.

Great actor. I loved him in my favourite film Field of Dreams. Joining Ray Liotta once again. R.I.P

This is very sad news indeed. I’m one of many who grew up first knowing him as the strong but gentle voice of Mufasa in The Lion King, full of wisdom.

Field of Dreams is the greatest film ever made, due, in no small part, to James Earl Jones

What a long stage career he had: his first Broadway appearance was in 1957, the last was in 2016. I first saw him in The Great White Hope in 1968 (yes, I’m old), then in several other productions right up to his next-to-last Broadway appearance in You Can’t Take It With You in 2014.
The only other actor I can think of, at least in my admittedly Broadway-centric lifetime, who had a similarly long career onstage was Angela Lansbury, whose Broadway career was almost coterminous with Jones’s: her first appearance was in 1957, the last in 2012. I wonder which of the current crop of actors will still be going strong onstage 50 years from now.

Agree totally with Tall Paul above. His speech near the end of FOD assuring Costner’s character that the people will come to the baseball field to re-live childhood memories is one of the greatest life-affirming speeches in cinema. RIP James Earl Jones
