I've seen a lot of complaints on various social media that the sentences are disproportionate to the offence - not taking into account most of the people convicted have prior offences, and with this latest one added to it their sentences will have been more strict.

The judiciary gave rapid hefty sentences for one reason and one reason only and stem the threat of an insurrection.

Is that because they pleaded guilty and didn’t go to trial? Have I just answered my own question? According to the BBC the most common charge is violent disorder, which has an upper limit of 5 years. So any mitigation (like pleading guilty and showing some degree of contrition) will knock it down a bit. The CPS seem to be trying to get more riot charges now which could lead to longer sentences.

Not much changes does it; as a deterrent, heads used to get put on spikes on busy thoroughfares, now they are presented above the fold on page 1 of mainstream (and social) media.
It's still Starmer holding the centre together - and being seen to be doing that.

All of a sudden, I seem to know rather more about (what was) the world's second tallest sailing mast than I do about how, in the last 5 years, several hundreds inflatable rubber boats have suddenly appeared, ready to go, from behind French sand dunes ..

Okay
Money does talk hence why the majority are coming over because they see the UK as the land of milk and honey, which isn’t a bad thing, worry when the boats voluntarily don’t come over as that is when the economy is heading down the toilet.
I have no doubt that both Conservatives and Labour, if they really wanted to they could stop the boats overnight, without the expensive sideshow of Rwanda (which is the same as build a wall) and a gimmick of a distraction. However with migrants coming over looking for a better life it sends a subliminal message that the economy is strong and vibrant. As I said if the Government wanted to stop the boats, then could pronto.Thoses rubber boats that hide behind sand dunes you allude to, well each one must have a fixer (think engineer Miss Saigon) that the correct people are getting on, no freeloaders! Or they can hit the gig economy, but so long as people want their food delivered or ride in a pedicab it won’t

After headline-hugging sentencing, the second limb of Newish Labour's current policy is becomong clearer; some restatements, some fresh. Most comprehensive mainstream piece - effectively a run-though of policy - seems to be in the Telegraph, which you can probably only read in full by using the webpage first linked, and then c%p the article. Also interesting for Yvette Cooper's reinvention as a 21st century version of Helen Mirren in Prime Suspect:
Full article worth a poke.

The bit about cutting off the supply of boats reminded me of the days when gangs used to order online and pick their boats up in bulk from the Decathlon store at Calais -about 1 1/2 miles from Sangatte

Didn't know where to put this so I searched for 'politics' and this was the latest thread.
A bit of a gear change but not completely unconnected to this thread.
But what a speaker Michelle Obama is. Never noticed she was that good before then realised I can't really remember watching her before. She has now gone straight into my top ten speakers. Wow, she was amazing. Her husband ain't half bad either, perhaps he has picked up a thing or two from his good lady wife. (Barack was already in my top ten)

Another very informative read in the Telegraph, much of it about the consequences of new, confrontational action by French police towards migrants preparing to cross. Perhaps this is an interim development while the pivot to disrupting gangs takes shape: This overcomes the paywall : 12ft.io/
A little taste >

As we had a hefty debate on here with how social media was impacted on the riots. X (Twitter/sewer) has just been suspended in Brazil fo not complying with a court order.

5 years ago I was at a protest in Whitehall when the Tory Government prorogued parliament…..we have had a bizarre 5 years all round. If it was a play you’d say the writer overegged it and it just wasn’t plausible….leaving Europe, Boris Johnson as PM, pandemic with lockdown, right to protest severely restricted, so many Tory PMs…..bizarre I am also reading 47th by Bartlett with renewed respect….it seemed a little far fetched when we saw it but not quite so much now.

Not yet a play, latecomer but we are in fact living in 1984, so in a novel.

* below is not satire. Peoples Vote will be turning in its grave. New PM of France Michel Barnier recently (anyone remember him): Also, it seems Germany is absolutely not looking to take forward the Conservative's Rwanda scheme: I, for one, completely trust what an unelected ambassdor says on this, while the German equiv. of Reform is, at least, the second largest party back home in most German states, and growing: www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/clyl5p2zd50o
Each regional election adds urgency: Migration coming at the EU political class fast and hard.
Looking at the horizon, the EU may well be the reason Starmer's ratings could look okay in 4 years.
