I'm not sure I follow. What was just a broken pair of tights/stockings and which crazies do you think I'm believing about what? If you are referring to the escaped testicle, I saw a screen shot of it. I wasn't offended. The person who posted was laughing about it and not crazy or offended. It wouldn't have been obvious during the show, and the screen shot was taken by someone planning a joke about 'Papa Smurf' being on the booze. People were laughing about it. But just one dress rehearsal would have been enough to realise that a different pair of shorts were required. An inappropriate surface/ shoes for the Cancan dancers is a more serious issue as they could have been hurt. But all point to the same lack of preparation and proper rehearsal by the organisers. metro.co.uk/2024/07/27/fans-mistakenly-claim-performers-testicle-seen-olympics-opening-ceremony-21310234/Either way it’s perpetuating a myth which is causing (faux) outrage and as a result, people suffering abuse.

Not a big follower of the Olympics TBH, and much of it has by-passed me over the past week, but after all the comments here about Celine Dion, I searched out the YouTube recording and have to agree, she was superb. CD nailed that much covered song. Even the black printed satin(?) dress was perfect.
Was also weirdly pleased that the TV cameras managed to find a guy crying during the number after showing all the women's tears!

I thought Celine's performance was one of the few highlights of the opening ceremony but one thing I don't understand is that people are complaining about Lady Gaga performing and not being French but neither is Celine but no one seems to be concerned about that.

I missed Gaga but did think Celine’s performance quite magical, especially given her troubles.

Celine is a tad more French than Lady Gaga being from the French speaking province of Canada Quebec I thought she was Swiss but have I got that confused with her singing for Switzerland in Eurovision?

Posts removed. We’re not having the gender/trans debate on this forum. Thanks.

Thank you for clarifying. I was one of the "crazies" who saw the photo on the night (before the Last Supper argument reared its head) and everyone I knew was having a laugh about it. But may I suggest that if your intention is to avoid faux outrage, or to limit abuse, it's better to explain the source of the misunderstanding instead of going on the attack by accusing others of believing "crazies" and assuming a misunderstanding can only occur because of terrible motives.

Celine is a tad more French than Lady Gaga being from Quebec I think Celine feels sort-of French, so it's fine. Meanwhile American Gaga talks up up her Italian roots. But if there were not for Celine then having Lady Gaga wouldn't have felt so weird. The decision feels like an admission that the French don't have enough quality singers, or none with sufficient international success. Where's Vanessa Paradis when you need her?! Don't get me wrong, I love Gaga. She's a brilliant, international star, but the section felt flat and I'm sure there are lots of French singers who could have given an equally good performance. Celine, however, is a very, very rare talent and her performance was so perfect for the moment, and so full of emotion that it felt French and truly international at the same time. Back to the sport. I keep seeing tributes to Andy Murray and they are making me all emotional. But so many great emotional moments across the various arenas. I just wish our tabloid media paid more attention to them than to certain reality tv stars.

BBC prioritising inane chat over live athletics action as usual.

Nah mate, Joey Essex is on Love Island 😂

Apology & explanation - when I searched for the clip of this last week I found - what turned out to be - an MTV recording from 8 years ago (but posted after the Olympic Opening) rather than the Paris recording - hence the comments about the tears and dress! At the risk of offending the legions of Dion fans I think the MTV version is superior.
As the older version was a benefit concert following the Bataclan atrocity, it may also go towards explaining the l'amour shown to Dion, above that to Ga-Ga, as well the heightened emotion on display.

The over performance by Australia in the medals table is insane considering it's a smaller population compared to Team GB and Team France.

Australia: i grows every 4 years: London > Rio > Toyko > Paris. Huge national investment project: currently recruiting a chunk of the GB coaching staff for the next two Olympic cycles, ending in a home Olympics (Bribane 2032).

This section of the closing ceremony is making me think of the stranger kind of Wagner production! (Though I evidently have quite different cultural references to the Eurosport commentators as they likened it to a Coldplay concert.)

The French are normally brilliant at Son Et Lumiere displays.
But this is lacking in substance and has precious little style.

Part of the challenge is that the commentators have been given so little info in advance so they are unable to give the context to explain what is supposed to be going on.

If it needs explaining, then it is failing
I say the same with productions that only make sense once you have read the notes in the programme.
It has to make sense without explanation. There may be nuance that can be brought out through notes and commentary. But the basics should be communicated directly

They probably didn't tell the commentators anything as the organisers haven't got a clue what's going on either. The only thing that makes this better than the opening ceremony is that it's not raining. I'm only waiting for Tom Cruise then I can go to bed.

I do wish the commentators were honest about the Balloon Cauldron.
At no point has it been the Olympic flame
It has simply been water mist and LED lights. No fire at all.
All the name of being eco
But the flame has enormous significance in terms of the Olympic movement. Lit for each games in Greece and then transported carefully to the host city.
They should have found a technological way of minimising the carbon whilst still keeping the flame alive. Or just do some real offsetting by planting a new woodland
The Olympic flame is too important

Agree. They talk about being Eco and yet they have just shown a long clip of the torch journey around the world and I saw about a dozen clips of them lighting a cauldron at different destinations. That's not very eco!
