I mean box office is great and all but Tár is one of the best films of the last few years - I guess it’s long but it’s also funny and quite accessible, hardly what I’d call pretentious or desperate (both of which are fairly worthless criticisms) Shame no one went to see it then really isn’t it? Oh, did more people go see your movie?

I'm not sure if there has been an influx of new users or something, but this forum is really starting to feel like its going downhill...

The nastiness on this forum does, at times, have me questioning some folk. No actor or actress, playwright or director, sets out to create something below par and, as 'Meryl Streep' says, even the greatest have had their duds. We don't all have to like every performer. There is someone many of you on here rave about and who I wouldn't go and watch if you gave me a comp - but I respect her career and I respect your opinions. As for Blanchett, I've never seen her on stage. On film, I think she's one of the best and most intelligent actresses of her generation. Can we not just be pleased someone of her calibre wants to come and perform on the London stage. Yes, an actress whose most recent stage appearance in London was one of the worst productions of the past ten years who is now about to star in a production of a play that often fails in English translation that is charging £195 a ticket for the best seats is beyond criticism. You haven't even seen it yet - it isn't even in rehearsal and presumably is still being conceived. I hope to God one failure in your life has defined your entire career.

I'm not sure if there has been an influx of new users or something, but this forum is really starting to feel like its going downhill... It's being going downhill a while. Like so much of modern life, some on here seem totally incapable of balanced debate, the polite sharing of opinions, and the respecting of those held by others. I'd name and shame but I wouldn't sink to their level.

If a high profile actor’s body of work and choice of projects is not a valid topic for discussion and critique when they’re about to appear in a high profile play, I don’t really know what we’re all doing here. All I would ask is that members recognise when their point has been made. If you don’t like a members opinions it’s possible to block them. See FAQ #17 here theatreboard.co.uk/post/256470/thread

Imo, there has been shift in tone. Why not come here for different points of view, not to identify with one and depreciate others: positive vs. negative. Is this US-style social media? I haven't thought so but it feels like the simpleton culture of with us/against us, for/against is growing ever stronger here. Perhaps some people switch tabs and carry on in the same tone.
Y'all have a good day.

We’re not having a forum good/forum bad discussion in this thread. If you want to have that discussion we have a feedback section.

I almost forget to ask. Is there anyway we could still get tickets for the opening night? From what I see it's been sold out since the very start, even before the members sale. Is it possible that they are all snapped up by barbican Patrons or that Barbican is holding on to tickets to possibly sell on the day itself? I’d imagine that it’s not and has never been on sale to the public. It will be invite only.

If they call it 'opening night', I fully expect it to be opened to the public. If they want to do an invitation only, by all means, but take the performance off the calendar, and don't call it the 'opening night'. Maybe I'm just caught up with the semantics, but the idea that the 'opening night' is really opened for the Very Important People only irks me.

Sometimes tickets come back for Opening/Press Nights, but the producers/venue are also aware of the obsessive fan types/Insta “I Was There On Opening Night” types, and those just there to star gaze, whom they’ll want to firmly keep outside, or at least only in the foyer.

That makes no sense. So 'star gazing' is not ok for opening nights but ok for previews and the shows after? If the opening night is made for the press, then it's not the opening night, isn't it? It's just a press night imo. It just feels disingenuous to call it an opening night. Apparently, it's only the peasants who must be boorish, airheaded morons who are just there to look at pretty faces and won't know how to appreciate the play. Urgh.

Press/morning nights are often not on sale to the public. I don’t see the problem- they have to accommodate a lot of people that might associated to the show, plus sometimes critics.

I have no problem with that either. There is one date in April that was marked 'sold out' as well, and I reckon that's also for the press. That isn't marked 'opening night' though. Like I said, it's just how they called it. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth. YMMV obviously, and I'll stop harping or I'll just be repeating my boring points over and over.

It's called either opening night or press night. Either way nothing special happens other than press and random celebrities invited

I think I've made that point very clear and I shall not be repeating it again. They should just call it a press night and leave it off the calendar. I don't give a sh*t who's sitting in the audience as long as their heads aren't blocking my view.

They're going to invite people and then stick them in the last row of the gallery ?

You haven't even seen it yet - it isn't even in rehearsal and presumably is still being conceived. Just on this specific point, it's his existing German 2023 production of the play re-cast isn't it ? And if it is then be aware in Berlin it was 3hrs WITH NO INTERVAL.

It's not unusual for venues use to 'sold out' as a short cut - I've seen it used regularly for access performances, 'black out' performances, obv. press nights. It's a way of controlling (press night), but also of verbally informing people of the nature of the performance before they book (so they contact the box office to book). It's rubbish because it means the audience is much smaller than everyone wants but it's often done so as to err on the side of caution.
Press night is just a chummy, lets-have-a-drink, friends/industry networking occasion, isn't it?

They're going to invite people and then stick them in the last row of the gallery ? That is literally what happens on press nights. Some people get invited and put in terrible seats. They have a lot of contractual tickets for press night to accommodate. Most people involved in the shows get 2 tickets. Lead actors /producers/director etc will get many more. This ain’t anything new. Not sure why anyone is bothered by this. In my experience, press nights are a rubbish night to see a show anyway. It’s not a normal audience, and often there is zero atmosphere cos many have seen it already in previews and are just there to swan about.

I used to go to them occasionally at the NT, you could buy tickets for them in the normal way except for a block allocated in the stalls.

Some press/opening nights have seats on sale- usually upper circle or not great seats.

I found them not much different than the regular run, unlike closing nights of which I went to a few too which were far from normal and to be avoided.
