I absolutely adored this and found it a top to bottom delight! Hope so as I’m going on my birthday!

I saw today's matinee of this. I enjoyed it though I'd probably agree with greenandbrownandblue's assessment of it as "light comedy" rather than something with loads of belly laughs. Nothing wrong with that of course, and the actors all do an excellent job, but it's not something that will linger in the mind for very long.

I saw this last weekend, having buckled and bought my most expensive theatre ticket of the year and possibly ever - and yet not the top price at this venue. So though I can see why some disliked this, I was glad to find that I loved it and had a great time. There was so much to enjoy: the fantastic cast, their many musical skills, the lovely costumes, the variety of characters, etc. The only downsides were that the Menier itself, always a cramped and tricky building to negotiate, was even worse than usual for trip hazards and pinch points due to the current building work. Also slightly annoying that I carefully chose what appeared to be an aisle seat but wasn't: it was a couple in, though luckily I still managed to escape relatively quickly. It woud be great for this version of the play to have a longer life, though it's hard to imagine a better production.

Perfectly nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon I thought.
The play definitely is a light comedy rather than an out and out farce, but the cast are so charming that it doesn't really matter. Adore Nancy Carroll and she's great fun, with Dillie Keane and Sara Crowe providing very different laughs as support but I liked everyone really.
Only downside as others have said is the Menier itself which is a literal building site. If it's back to it's former glory in time for the Producers I won't mind but christ, what a horrid place it currently is.
John Lithgow was having a nice time on his day off from the Royal Court though, which was nice to see.

You’re right, it isn’t a farce and I’ve no idea why they are advertising it as such.

If Nancy Carroll wasn't doing Hamlet at the RSC, the Menier would have considered a transfer to the West End.

Got a Rush ticket for this last night, great seat and such good value. I loved this show!
I know nothing about the original play, but thought Nancy Carroll had done a fantastic job with the script - so sharp with zinging one liners. It really made me laugh.
Thought her performance was brilliant too, in fact I felt all the cast were pitch perfect with their comic performances. Their ability to play musical instruments while acting was also incredibly impressive. Sara Crowe playing the Dowager Countess of Drumdurris seemed to be slightly channelling Geraldine James (I had several Mrs Proudie flashbacks) and George Blagden's facial expressions in his role as Valentine White, reminded me a little of a young Hugh Laurie.
This show had none of the creakiness one can sometimes get with classics and which I've experienced in a couple of recent OT productions.
The only thing I didn't like were the last couple of lines, which I felt didn't really work and felt tacked on.
Really feel this deserves a West End transfer.

Thought this was excellent the other night. Very funny, especially the second part which zips along. Great music too. The theatre is a right mess and service was very slow.

Really enjoyed this. Absolutely first-rate cast, and a judicious reworking of the text from the wonderful Nancy Carroll. Not an out and out farce, and all the better for that. My wife and I had a discussion on the way home about the relevance of plays like this nowadays. My view is that period pieces done well still deserve to be performed. Restoration comedies included.
