Having done Viola's Room in my shorts this afternoon I am putting on long trousers before Alma Mater this evening at the Almeida as I'm in the front row and don't want to distract the cast.

I say they are fine, assuming you are not talking about the sort of short shorts that were popular with 1980s footballers and could be mistaken for swimming trunks.

With the way some theatres get really warm especially if it's hot outside it has to be comfort so as long as they are not too short then I'm fine with shorts.Everything is more casual now so I'd rather be comfortable in shorts than baking in jeans/ long trousers.

I'm sure plenty of women wear skirts to the theatre that show just as much leg as shorts do, so I really don't see the issue.
Besides, what is considered "smart" clothing for men has changed drastically over the last decade or so. Just look at what young actors like Timothee Chalamet are wearing on the red carpet. People are starting to push the boundaries of traditional gendered clothing a lot more and I see men arriving at events "smartly" dressed in far more adventurous outfits than they used to, and to be honest, I applaud it.
So... wear shorts if you want to. Just switch your phone off and don't chat during the show and we'll get along just fine.

Be warned! I'm wearing shorts to Starlight Express tonight so if you are going you may want to consider rebooking for another performance if you are of a nervous disposition.

You pay for the tickets, you wear what you like, I've never got this obsession with dressing up for the theatre, tracksuit bottoms and t-shirt every time for me, rather be comfortable if I'm sitting for three hours.

They are one of this summer's biggest fashion trends. Very much spearheaded by the lovely Paul Mescal. The cut of clothes only ever looks weird during a fashion transition. Once established, pretty much on a generational, 20-year cycle, no-one bats an eyelid. Remember the shock and horror circa 2000 when trend-setters rocked up in extreme skinny jeans? That's gone full cycle and we're now back to baggy, with skinny looking odd again. The human brain is adept at pattern matching, so once we're used to something, we normalise it. Extreme short shorts (aka hot pants) on men -- women have always been able to get away with them -- are taking much longer to cycle, but they're definitely on the up. I remember jogging in very skimpy Adidas shorts around 1982 and they were considered normal then and were a standard part of the kits of football teams in the late 70s. Why have short shorts on men taken so long to revive? The hip-hop/rap influence on oversized pants has been quite enduring, but I suspect it's mainly down to male insecurities and fretting that their sexuality would be misconstrued. We now seem to be entering a post-metrosexual phase, where people are more likely to express themselves through appearance regardless of (or may be in spite of) what others may think. It's a 21st century twist on the punk ethos. |

Unclear what it is about the Northern Line but last summer it was almost impossible to travel without sitting opposite hirsute men wearing summer dresses. Not yet this summer. Envious; we all need a breeze downstairs.

See, I may have defended the short, because I know that mine are all nice ones but wearing ‘joggers’ outside of a gym or the home is a limit for me. Especially grey ones that make you look like a convict. Absolutely not. If I were a performer and I looked out onto a sea of grey jogging pants I might give up there and then.
