Been meaning to start this thread for a while! Are there any phrases that annoy you, whether it be from other theatregoers or reviewers? I'm sure I'm guilty of saying these myself at one time or another, by the way. Off the top of my head: - Not a dry eye in the house (You've inspected literally every face for tears?!)
- Complete standing ovation / standing ovation on all levels etc... (Again, you've managed to check that every theatregoer is standing?!)
- It's got no memorable songs in it! (Some of my favourite shows didn't have stand-out or memorable songs seeing it for the first time, but several listens later...)
- Worth the price of the ticket alone (especially when it refers to a very short scene - you wouldn't pay £90 for two minutes, I'm sorry.)
What are your bugbears? No offence to anyone intended, just a bit of fun!

I think you might be taking a few of those too literally.

Standing ovation
Review of amateur production recently referred to ovation. It was three friends of cast only!

BEG BORROW OR STEAL A TICKET!
(99% of the time used for something that hasn't sold out).
Literally get a grip and buy one in the conventional manner if you wanna go!

Being referred to as a theatre lovvie! Whenever I discuss anything thats happening with the forum with my (non theatre) best mate he instantly goes into “theatre voice” and throws out things like “you can’t ban me dearest heart… don’t you know who I am love?” and “Bless you my darling”. All in the voice of Brian Blessed 😐

I think you might be taking a few of those too literally. But that's kind of my point! If it's not literal/factual, why say it?

I don't know if this counts or why it annoys me so much, but 'at stage door.'

Just looking at the NT homepage, it’s littered with cliches:
“fiery, new production”
“thrilling, new production”
“spectacularly reinvented”
I get they need to drum up interest and sell the productions, but they (and other theatres) use the same phraseology all the time. It gets boring.

The ‘Must End’ phrasing always has annoyed me, not sure why! It’s always something like “must end in May 2028” 🤣

Another is "includes programme, ice-cream and interval drink" because you just know they've hiked up the price of the seat by about fifty quid!

Whenever someone is called a “national treasure” or something like “soap legend” in casting. When anyone's referred to as a "national treasure" or "nation's sweetheart" it's invariably someone I can't stand.

"Prior to the West End" - never to be seen again! "Direct from the West End" - a journey that has actually taken months if not years!
People calling a "musical" a "play" People calling a "cast recording" a "soundtrack"

“On the West End!”
Just no.
ON Broadway. IN the West End.

When people talking about a West End transfer say "coming into town".
Makes me wince.
