Audra as Mama Rose is great casting but I'm more interested to see who is playing Louise and June.

She recently denied it as a rumour and said she was not doing it. I understand that if she wasn't signed at the time she didn't confirm it but what's the point of lying?

It'll be interesting to see if they address the race issues of the time in this production. An African American burlesque performer would've been perceived very differently from her white counterpart, not to mention the difficulties of travelling around trying to get work as a single woman with children.

Apparently, Wolfe agreed to direct as long as there were no book changes so it appears this is “classic” Gypsy.

I'll probably get shot down but I find the choice of actor a bit odd. I see Mama Rose as an actor who belts out the songs, Ethel Merman, Bette Midler, Imelda Staunton, Patti, where Audra is a soprano with a wonderful voice but I don't see her as a belter.

She may have a soprano's range but she's also got a strong chest voice that's very adaptable. If you look at her repertoire, there's a wide variety of songs and styles. If she can play Deena in Dreamgirls and Billie Holliday, she's not going to struggle with the Gypsy score at all.

Interesting, cause I was going to post a similar post. I have no doubt that she'll sing the hell out of this but Rose is feisty and I'm just can't see her voice fitting the role- that said, I'd love to be proven wrong.

One of the things that has always characterised her as a singer is that she makes consistently intelligent choices about repertoire, and about how she uses her voice. I don't have any inside information, but based on, well, her entire career so far, I doubt she'd have signed up for it unless she knew she could make the music work well with her voice. She's not going to do the equivalent of, say, Sutton Foster signing up to play Marian the Librarian and then trampling My White Knight into the ground.

She doesn't really. It would have been easier to say "no comment" rather than lying. In my humble opinion. If she hadn't denied it outright, people would have taken the lack of a denial as proof that it was happening. She couldn't open that door before all the contracts were signed, so she couldn't say "no comment". What else could she have done?

Telecharge have released Amex tickets now. Some in row B Mezzanine are $173 cheaper per person than the seats next to them (on peak dates).

Don’t know how true this is but hearing rumours that Paul Giamatti may be Herbie and Keke Palmer may be Louise. But this is just rumoured for now, unless anyone else can confirm.

Why can't we have Carolee Carmello? she would be amazing I feel like she's done it in regional theatre. Probably not a big enough name to build an entire Broadway revival around although she would be amazing and her belting would shake Times Square.

I believe I read one of George C Wolfe’s conditions of him directing this, is that the book remains unchanged. Changing the race of those few characters isn’t altering the book, it’s just a casting choice.

An interesting NY Times article by African American writer John McWhorter criticizes the manner in which the characters are being depicted. Here's a quote from the piece and a link, though I think it's behind a paywall: "In other words, Rose isn’t just being played by a Black actress. She is being played, it seems, as a Black character." "Colorblind casting has become common, even fashionable, and that’s a wonderful thing. It’s creating opportunities for actors of color and it’s opening the minds of audience members who would once upon a time have been unable even to imagine, say, a blockbuster musical in which the founding fathers are played by Black and Hispanic men. As I have written, the idea that Broadway is a white realm is now blissfully outdated. But colorblind casting doesn’t work if it stops halfway, seeming to let Black actors play white parts but then pulling back. A talent as rare as Audra McDonald shouldn’t play a Black Rose. She should just play Rose." www.nytimes.com/2024/06/13/opinion/audra-mcdonald-gypsy-broadway.html
