Well that was one of the fastest 3 hours ever - went by in a flash!
I knew nothing going in, and didn't expect it to be as funny as it was! What a great play! You could have heard a pin drop throughout all of Act 3 though, not a sound.
Imelda is, quite simply, perfection. Its the best 'straight acting' performance I've ever seen, with her Mamma Rose the best musical too. She just got it, and could play both sides of Martha at the click of a finger.
But for me, Conleth Hill was the star. What a performance. Totally inspiring.
I don't think I've seen acting like that before ever.

Managed to get a £20 rush ticket for the matinee yesterday to replace my bought-on-the-day-of-release cheap end of stalls ticket which had to be sacrificed to a prawn related incident.
Front row so couldn't complain, I was excited and nervous to see this as it was Imelda Staunton but also I saw the excellent Kathleen Turner/Bill Irwin production ten or so years ago I can't add much more to what has already been said about Ms Staunton as it was a superb performance but she was matched and at points surpassed by Conleth Hill. Each time I see this show I forget the power of the role of George as often the focus seems to go to whoever has the female lead in the show but the last two productions have won Tonys for the lead actor on Broadway so I think it's an under appreciated part. I was less enthralled with their younger co-stars especially Ms Poots, I was torn between thinking she was terrible and thinking she was magnificent. There were many many micro expressions and actions on her part which gave a lot to the character but I wondered how they played further back in the auditorium, I often think Honey is the most pivotal part in the play despite appearances but this didn't quite happen yesterday. I'd love to hear from others if it does play well in the circle for example.
Been thinking a lot about the power plays within the, er, play and wondered if a gender switch version would work?

Once again I find myself genuinely baffled by all the love for a show on here. To me, this play was unfortunately everything I spend my life telling people theatre is not: three hours of people screeching at each other.

I have seen two productions and George really is the heart of the play, not surprised Conleth Hill is killing it.

I didn't feel the love for it that so many people obviously do.

I'm going to see it at the pictures next week.
I shall be taking a selection of non-Imelda approved snacks and cocking a snook.

I know this is a stoopid question because it's "NT Live", but is the cinema broadcast really live o r is it recorded?

I know this is a stoopid question because it's "NT Live", but is the cinema broadcast really live o r is it recorded? Unless it's an Encore screening or in the singular case of NT's Peter Pan which is in fact a showing of a pre-recorded performance, all other NT Live screenings should be 100% live!

Next Thursday on the ATG website has warning it is a live recorded performance and warns faces may be on screen, and has most of the stalls at a tenner in case their view is blocked briefly by cameras.

I bet that adds to the tension onstage. "Fresh pants for miss Staunton!" Ha! It's interesting you say that. Managed to catch the tail end of an interview on The Andrew Marr Show with Imelda Staunton and Conleth Hill. Imelda has said this is her first NT Live (though of course she has previous experience of recorded performances!) but this will be Conleth's 3rd, and he said that you just don't notice the cameras at all. Imelda also pointed out that they'd had their rehearsal for the cameras and sounded quite relieved when she pointed out that they're positioned quite far away (but that seemed like a half-joke!). I suspect that once it gets going, and the performances & type of play this is, it wouldn't surprise me if they almost forgot it was being filmed lived altogether! With different plays though, and especially when they're filming live in spaces such as the Olivier, I can imagine how you just couldn't ignore the cameras! Slightly OT, but I wonder whether they'll NT Live Follies. No other musical, unless you count Threepenny Opera, has been part of NT Live and it's possible that maybe it's too much of a risk for something to go wrong?! Who knows!

Ooh that would be good. It should be possible for NT Live - The Rocky Horror Show did a live broadcast (although granted their production scale isn't quite as grand). The actual performance was broadcast live, but the audience arrivals were from the evenings before.

Yeah I just picked up one of those £10 tickets (though they ended up being almost £14 when you put on the admin fee or whatever) because I was looking for an excuse to go back and see it one last time. I've never sat so far back in the stalls before though but I'm sure it'll be fine SaveSave

I suspect it's not so much the risk as the rights issues. The first batch of NT Lives were all out of copyright stuff or new plays presumably where the filming rights were in the contract. it's taken them a while to get round to older in-copyright material

Pillars aside, that stalls isn't bad, aine. You will be. The stalls seats that are £10 (granted they're all that are left) are all behind the pillars, but I picked one that's not directly beside it. Honestly don't mind where I'm sitting though, I just want to see Imelda again - priorities

FELA! was broadcast by NT Live. Ah yes, so it was! Missed that one, thanks. Would tie in with profquatermass' comment that it would be more to do with rights, which sounds much more plausible!

And London Road was an NT Live from the Olivier too. Are you sure? I thought they never did that one, as much as I wanted them to.

I remember seeing the film of London Road in an NT Live-esque screening which featured red carpet and a post-film Q&A, but I don't think the show itself was screened?
