It was meant to be the disney plus tv series which they are now making as one movie.
Considering its track record of late, its a bit worrying (from a creative point) disney have decided to do this. There was no sign of this before, Lin isn't involved, is this a cash grab to try and get a hit movie ASAP in this financial year. Especially as the announcement was made on the companies earnings call.
Agree its odd as the remake is due in 2025 I think.

Exactly, and why would he want to be associated with a lame sequel. They’re always rubbish. The two desperados were probably fourth or fifth choice. Shake at that “mle” 🙄. Surely not ..I am pretty sure ..that they both were first choice. .after the Grammy win..and because of the connections between Disney ..Emily Bear…and her agent Richard Kraft ..for years.. a female..who is under contract since the age of 16 next to this legends..Oscar,Tony etc. kraft-engel.com/clients/will never ever be fifth choice Yes, it seemed it was planned first as a series ..but in the end we all don‘t know.. Perhaps you should not be so negative..or not so full of envy…there seem to be a lot of „Piers Morgans“ here..lol screenrant.com/moana-2-announcement-disney-animated-movie-problems-fix/They're worse than Piers Morgans, they're gay Piers Morgans - Andrew Pierce's!! I think we need to be realistic in that Disney need to be pulling in more money & a Moana sequel, rather than another original film which flops, is a good way to do that. And it's not going to be straight-to-video quality is it?

And it's not going to be straight-to-video quality is it? That’s exactly the worry though. This was supposed to be a direct to streaming project that they have decided to push into cinemas as they are really struggling at the box office and they don’t have another animated movie ready for thanksgiving. So they’ve got to turn something that was created to be an episodic tv show into a full movie which could really create problems when it comes to the pacing of the film. And as it is a direct to streaming project I would expect the level of animation to not necessarily be hitting the standard that you expect from the latest Disney movies. It will probably look like the last Moana movie which came out 8 years ago which means it will look ok but it’s not pushing the boundaries of what animation is capable of today. Like how the Monsters Inc Disney+ show was clearly not up to the level of animation that Pixar is known for. I love Moana. I genuinely hope it’s great. And also their number one choice of composer would absolutely be Lin Manuel Miranda. His work across Moana and Encanto has been hugely successful for Disney. But Lin has bigger fish to fry than a straight to streaming tv show.

Toy Story 2 was originally meant to be a direct to video release before changing it to a feature film. I know Disney aren't doing great but they are not going to collapse or become bankrupt anytime soon.

People do realise Disney is more than just movies? They make more money from the theme parks and things like ESPN.

They are in financial trouble, and have been for a while. Largely thanks to the over spend from purchasing Fox. The theme parks are one of the few areas of the business keeping them going, and even they have issues. There have also been rumours of them selling off ESPN. There has been increasing pressure from share holders, including some wanting to mount a revolt. Anyone who thinks disney is still the pinnacle of success in the entertainment industry are out of touch

People do realise Disney is more than just movies? They make more money from the theme parks and things like ESPN. So they shouldn’t ever worry about their movies being profitable because they have other revenue streams? There’s a reason that over the next few years we are getting Moana 2, Zootopia 2, Inside Out 2, Toy Story 5 and Frozen 3. Money. They also find themselves in the middle of the “culture wars” and have a reputation that they need to rescue. Bad box office does not help the stock price. I’m looking forward to all of these sequels as I like all of those movies but it’s all coming at once as they need to turn around their box office and get people going back to cinemas to see Disney movies rather than waiting for Disney+

Yes they do, but they also haven't been as big as company as they are now, or taken on as much debt (as they did in the fox deal) before. I don't know why you're so keen to dismiss what people are saying when it's based on fact. No one is saying they are about to go bust. But it is a concerning time, which is also why takeovers have even been mooted.

You only have to look at the 70s and early 80s where nothing was a success and also the early 2000s where they also struggled as well. They probably leaned too much on the live action side on remakes and Marvel but that can easily be fixed. I think the stake in Epic Games is an indication of what their next move might be. BurlyBeaR Would it be better to move some of these posts to the Moana 2 thread, only because it's only a tad off-topic.

RE: Lin Manuel Miranda - he’s still involved in the live action remake so he’s not exactly out of the franchise. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s heavily involved in the music for the sequel even in an advisory capacity.

I’m confused, but maybe it’s just this head cold I Can’t shake. If it’s out in November, surely it’s already been made? Were the original leads in the TV show? How can they edit a TV series down to be a movie?

How can they edit a TV series down to be a movie? The episodes were likely 20 mins max so depending on number of episodes it could be edited down. Not unusual for vocals to be recorded after animated It does seem last minute. There is still conflicting reports on the original stars reprising. I wouldn't take social media stuff as 100% confirmation. Could be a negotiation tactic to show disney they need them. All very messy and last minute regardless. I saw some comparisons from people to some of the straight to video sequels that were originally meant to be a TV series in the 90s and 00s. Let's hope Moana 2 is better than those!

There is no conflicting reports. Both stars confirmed their involvement after your article was posted. I don’t know how much more confirmation is needed than the two leads themselves confirming it. Dwayne Johnson also confirms that recording has already taken place: uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/dwayne-johnson-teases-cutting-edge-194331933.html#:~:text=I%20can
