For me my first visit was Mame "hanging on for dear life" in the balcony for 50p.I think the seats were benches. All I remember about the show was during "Open a new window" Ginger Rodgers and "nephew" sitting on a window frame and "flying" across the stage. My other memory at the Lane was at the end of "Gone with the Wind" as Melanie died - after Bonnie had also succumbed to the grim reaper- played by a very young Bonnie Langford - someone behind me shouted out "Well, there goes another one!"

My first visit was Miss Saigon, though can't remember the year. It's a great thing though looking back at a particular theatre and it's history for all of us. Maybe this thread could continue into other major theatres too.

Watching the national lottery musicals night and the thought struck me
What if we don’t get a new show, but a move of something existing ? Phantom? LW show in a LW theatre?
I suppose logistically it’s a nightmare to move a show, but it’s not impossible?

Given that it has a) only recently been redesigned & refitted at some (relative) expense in its current home, b) only just come off being a regular listing on tkts and c) has recently closed on Broadway, I would say it isn’t quite the stable, sure thing it once was. Doubling its capacity would be financial suicide.

ALW and Cameron Mackintosh years ago decided against moving it to a bigger theatre and actually being in a smaller theatre has meant it's normally packed.

It would also look lost on stage at drury Lane.
An epic redesigned phantom at Drury Lane could be good though.

There was also an Irish dance show with Jean Butler called Dancing on Dangerous Ground. It went in straight after Miss Saigon but bombed in a few weeks.

Yea that was happening. Until it all fell apart. I don’t think I’ve often revealed a show and then it’s turned out to Not happen.

Which website do you use for past productions? Would be interested in taking a look. I only used Wikipedia for the general theatre hence the missed production probably. Then I just did a search for Pirates of Penzance when it was noted that was missing. I agree though it is interesting looking back on a particular theatre for all it's productions.

I remember seeing that ‘Pirates’ in Manchester when it toured. Seem to remember Paul Nicholas being involved.

I'm pretty sure I saw Eastwick there in 2000 so it should be 2000-2001

First thing I saw there was Lord of the Rings.
It’s a real shame The Witches just isn’t good enough. I’d be happy enough with another round of Oliver.

The "Lane" is a "problem" due to it's size even though ALW has reduced the seating. It's always needed a big name whether in it's star or name of the show - even though some big hitters from Broadway have died the death in the past (Sweeney Todd,Whorehouse etc) whereas some flops from the USA have flourished at the Lane (Shrek,Frozen).I think whatever is its next offering is it needed to be something to appeal first to regular but also "tuned into" theatre goers and then for a long run appeal to coach parties and families who "know the name" unless they resort to short runs like the Palladium.Trouble is I don't know of any shows at the moment whether touring the UK or from the USA will be an ideal tenant.

Hugh Jackman in The Music Man could fill it.
I'm not sure Sweeney with Josh Groban would fill it. He doesn't seem as big a name here.
A new Disney show like Hercules would do well (as long as word of mouth is good)

Hercules is coming, just isn't going into Drury Lane. It's headed elsewhere.
