A Black Nancy isn't unusual, Sophie Okonedo played the role in a BBC adaptation of Oliver Twist.

Sonia Swaby was a wonderful Nancy The last two prominent Nancys - at New York's Encores! and in Leeds were Black. It seems as though that will be the case in terms of casting this role going forward. As mentioned, Sonia Swaby was the first Black Nancy in a professional context in 1997 at the Palladium and was wonderful. Lionel Bart famously campaigned for Shirley Bassey to get the role in the 1968 film, but the studios went for 'slim and white' Shani Wallis as it was put in one of the Bart biographies.

While it's not unheard of, I wouldn't say its a show that's traditionally had the most diverse casts either, so I would have been surprised if this production didn't fix that a bit. I mean Sonia Swaby was 25 years ago.

She was a good Duke on the ‘Heathers’ cast recording, less so in a live setting. Great actress though.

The cast includes Simon Lipkin (Guys and Dolls, Avenue Q) as Fagin, Shanay Holmes (Miss Saigon, The Bodyguard) as Nancy, Aaron Sidwell (Henry VI, Wicked) as Bill Sikes, Billy Jenkins (Les Misérables, BBC’s Dodger) as the Artful Dodger and Philip Franks (The Rocky Horror Show, Witness for the Prosecution) as Mr Brownlow.

The burning question is- will Lipkin have a puppet?
Seriously though, about time he had a big role like this

Simon Lipkin is great casting. A very funny actor so made for the part. He might even be able to slip in a couple of magic tricks. I think my days of trekking to Chichester are over, it's such a slog, and Lord knows if there will be any trains on the day so will wait for this to come to London.

He's so talented and I think he'll make a brilliant Fagin. Not generally a big fan of Shanay but I'll reserve judgement, I'm sure the casting team know what they are doing.
